NA: Extractors/Headers thread.

  Top of Page

plain and simple... something new from me...

can someone explain what they are.....

what they do,

how they work,

benefits of having them,

usual price,

effect on car,

worthwhile,

change in note,

All of the above.. Ive got a mate who is selling them cheap, and im weighing up my options as to weather it is worth it or not..

Now not knowing what it does, i guess leaves it open to what im after.. And i guess as anyone would be after, as much as i can, for as little as i can, without cutting corners..

Thanks in advance guys, and by the way, if there is any other information i could put down here, to help with feedback, giz a hoy and ill edit this..

cheers

Okay..
I'm certainly no expert when it comes to exhaust set-up's.. But I'll do my best to provide you with at least some helpful info..
To the others out there, feel free to add anything I've missed smile

Headers/ Extractors are the section of the exhaust which join directly on to your engine block, ie. they are the first section of your exhaust system.

Extractors are generally contructed using something like T-304 Stainless Steel, however they can also be made from materials such as mild steel and Titanium (Very light weight, however incredibly expensive). You will also find that some extractors are contructed by Mandrel Bending the pipes (minimal join work) while others may be TIG Welded.. For something like a 2.5L Liberty, this doesnt make a whole lot of difference, however some prefer a Mandrel Bent system as there are less joins which often means a free-er flowing system.

The benefits of having them really depend on the application (car) you are using them on, and the design of the Extractors.

An exhaust system which utilises aftermarket extractors is generally going to produce much more impressive results on a Turbo charged vehicle when compared with the results achieved on a Naturally Aspirated car (N/A)..

In N/A 2.5L Gen III Liberty RX's I have seen aftermarket exhaust systems produce anything from negative gains (loss in power) all the way up to Dyno proven 9kw at the wheels..

Usual price?.. Depends on the car?.. for instance at the moment you can get T-304 Stainless Steel TIG Welded extractor for GenIII 2.5L Liberty's on eBay for around $450.00 landed in Australia.. I have seen similar systems range in price from $299 up to $850 - Just for the extractors.. All of them vary in their performance gains/ note produced due to their design.

Change in note?.. You will find extractors will generally enhance the boxer rumble note of the Subaru engine, however 'equal' length extractors will often combat this, and take away from the notorious subaru boxer rumble..
The majority of Liberty Extractors out there are un-equal length, so you shouldn't need to worry about losing the boxer rumble (.. you could always ask for a sound clip before you purchase to see how they sound?)

Hope that is of some help, and if you've got any further Q's.. feel free to ask! smile

Cheers,

Jonno

just to add on [J] 's 'inexperianced comments' (even though it took up half a page   ), extractors would help with other mods. putting extractors on with your stock exhaust already there would be a waste. so maybe put the money into a full exhaust (imporved note and performance) or use this as an excuse to get extractors and zorst.

This bloke is running a TT lib. Turbs specific info probably better. I heard (unqualified statement) that the gains arn't worth the price for turbo cars. Better of spending the money elsewhere.

..Sorry, didn't realise he was running a TT Lib..
You're probably better off speaking to some of the B4 owners then, or some of the guys who have already had exhausts done such as rooB4, motoboy and some of the others..

My N/a info probably isn't of much help.. O'well..

Interested to know who has them on their cars along with the rest of the exhaust system.

Ive read everyone talking about the unequal length making the distictive boxer note. how uneven do they have to be and would this affect the airflow?

i've seen Suprauc's video with his headers on but mine do not sound like that i think.  below are what my headers/extractors look like. sorry bout the quality of the pic.  car is the 2.5lt with 2.5inch system. hi flow res and cat with cannon muffler.

will try and get a video with the sound of it up in the next couple of days.

Re: NA: Extractors/Headers thread.

They're equal length headers dude... They're designed to reduce the pulsing noise that's created by the exhaust while still delivering a smooth flow through to the exhaust. Not surprised the your's isn't very rumbly!

Don't think it really matters how unequeal the length of the headers are to emphasise the boxer rumble - they've just got to be unequal

I'v got the same headers as Suprauc and they nice. The emit a nice subtle rumble.

If you had some unequal headers, that would certainly release a big rumble with the rest of your exhaust setup!

do you think it would be worth getting the side thats looped chopped or wouldn't this make much difference?

as in, instead of it coming forward then looping back around just have it cut and plumb it straight down?:Dntknw:

Re: NA: Extractors/Headers thread.

problem is, your car is an RX. the style that me and WhiteRX are using wont fit a gen2 RX because of the engine crossmember.
you could try merging the pipes diffenetly.

somthing like that maybe? (dodgy 2 sec paint jobby:victory: )

where they bolt onto the block had to be moddified. they had to cut the pipe and insert a 2 inch piece becoz it was

a) hitting the x member thing

and

b) didnt have the right angles on i think for it to be a good seal.

would it be possible for them to cut your designed ones to fit like they did on mine?

Yeah, you could get the loop chopped - the only difference it would make is it'd make your exhaust louder. I don't think it would interfere with any other engine components....

If you've got the money, someone that has the capability to do the changes and want a louder, boxer rumble exhaust, go for it!

How big is the cannon you've got?

**EDIT** Is that your car in the Avatar? Looks like you've got a scoop on your bonnet???? Don't you have an RX?

yep you are correct. 03 scoop and 99 vents.  bonnet was scrappy looking. covered in stone chips and had a stain on there courtesy of a bat when i bought it. came across the scoop for sale and then picked up the vents. had the bonnet down to metal then resprayed.

Re: NA: Extractors/Headers thread.

I just got extractors for my n/a Gen III liberty.
Bought them 'cos I'd cracked the originals and stainless ones were cheaper than genuine.

It's the first mod (hopefully the rest of the exahust will follow soon) and I'm pretty happy with the outcome, but they only went on this morning and I'm yet to drive for longer than 30 mins and faster than 60km/h...

I did notice a slight improvement at low revs stright up.
