NA exhaust system thread.

  Top of Page

Hey guys,

i need you opinions. My stock exhaust has a hole in it and it is annoying the **** out of me.

I have a bloke lined up ready to replace it, i just have to give him the word, but i was unsure as to size to put on. He has suggested 2" Sports system with a (i think) 4" cannon.

I have been reading through the various threads and noticed 2 1/4" has been getting thrown around a lot.

What do you guys think, is there much difference?

thanks in advanced

2" piping with a 4" Cannon!?!?! Forget it.. It will drone like a mutha at speed and sound like a sqeezed fart at revs.

Go for a 2.25" cat back system with a proper high flow 2.25" or 2.5" rear muffler with a 3" tip. That will look nice and sound pretty tough too. Please don't get a 4" cannon on a GX. Please.....

what do you mean by proper high flow 2.25" or 2.5" rear muffler?
is that the same as getting a 2.25" sports system?
how much do you think im looking at for that? roughly.

i checked my quote and it wasn't a 4" cannon it was a 3"....

A cannon has no real noise restriction qulaities as they are typically just an oversized extention to your pipe work.

A good sports muffler will restrict all of the horrible noise that a cannon produces, will actually aide in delivering more power, will sound awesome and look better than a cannon.
For instance, I have an MRT diff back muffler. It's 2.5", flowing through a round muffler with a 3" tip. It sounds good, looks good with it looking stock, although with a larger exhaust tip and adds to the cars performance.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not totally anti-cannon. They have their place on certain cars for certain applications. They certainly don't belong on Naturally Aspirated Libertys.

2 1/4 piping max, one hot dog resonator after the cat with an oval straight through muffler at the rear.

NO CANNON!

+1 CRUISN,
2 or 2 1/4" for a N/A. I wanted something bigger, but the exhaust shop guy talked me into a 2" hot dog resonator after the cat + oval straight through muffler at the rear. I'm glad he did, it sounds good but not offensive. If they're too big they get too droning.

Yes Ive learnt that over a few NA cars and my mate also owns an exhaust shop and knows his stuff too.

I have a 2" system on my 2.2 Lib with the above mufflers as stock piping is only 1 3/4".

You do need some backpressure on a stock NA motor.

What kind of car is it?
If its NA then don't go 3".
2.25 or 2.5" Max.

why do people not like 3" on an NA??

i demand reasons to rebuke my friend who had a turbo silvia and thinks that every car should have a drain pipe attached to it's engine...

for an engine to work efficiently it need to get the exhaust gases out quickly. too small of an exhuast is too restrictive.. whereas to large will not ave enough back pressure to pull the gas out.

2.25" is perfect on a 2.2ltr NA.. 2.5ltrs can run 2.5".. turbo engines 3"

cars need an amount of backpressure to run properly... this is provided by the turbo on a turbo car and therefore after the exhaust it can be as big as possible pretty much... on n/a this is provided by the exhaust and therefore going tobig will lose power and turn the car into a pig

Personally, i use a 2.5" press bent system on an EJ22, yes it did loose a little torque down low. But pffft, its a POS 2.2 so it didn't have much anyway.

It did however gain some legs in the mid-high rpm range.

How ever, running a 3" system would lose to much back pressure, and would really be gutless until you have the thing revving its tits off.
Please god don't use a canon. They're horrible.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Almost too good to be true.
What type of muffler are they giving you?

if you demand an oval muffler instead of a cannon, is that the better option??

an oval straight through muffler wouldn't do anything more than a cannon would, would it?

It muffles the sound better, depending on the quality of the muffler.
Also it looks 11tybillion times better.

The path through an oval straight through muffler normal enters on one side and exits in the centre so you have a slight change in direction through the muffler, which gives a better note and a quieter sound than a cannon thats straight through.
