My BH5 GTB 2.5 conversion

  Top of Page

Hi guys, DannyBoy here. I'm normally found over on www.Scoobycity.co.uk in the UK where I'm the chairman.

Anyway, I've just picked up this 99 Legacy GTB for my next project and needed a bit of help and advice from the tech forum here. Thought you might like to see before the work starts.

Its got a blown engine so its the perfect excuse for a decent power build. http://www.uklegacy.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

And here's the new EJ257 short motor just picked up and ready to go in.

I'm keeping the standard turbo setup to start with just to see what I can get out of it. Then when I get board probably a single big one.

That looks great Dannyboy.
There's some great driving to be had on the country roads around you is there not?!

So what was the advice you were wanting?

Thanks guys,

The "help and advice" I referred to was mainly answered using the search button. All I really needed to know is what the standard turbos were like (and capable of) and wether the heads had any differences I needed to know about when mateing to the 2.5.

As for the roads over here.....

If you keep the same sequential setup you'll run out of puff real early, but it will be a torque monster.
Even on my 2.5 the VF39 is too small for any real topend but down low it is like a V8. Even a tad too much to drive around town at peak hours.

Excellent, someone who knows how to use the search function!

As for the vid, those roads aren't in Norfolk, that's for sure!!!! Was it the Lakes? Or Wales?

Thanks for your opinion, good to hear from someone that has done the same thing already. Did you run the EJ257 with the standard setup first or go straight for the VF39?

I'm really just experimenting at this stage. I've never even driven the car as I got it with the blown engine so really just want to get it back on the road as cheaply as possible first to make sure I like it. Granted the EJ257 is not the cheapest option but it gives me the option of taking things further if I decide to keep it.

Sorry I thought you were refering to UK roads in general. Didn't realise you had local knowledge.

Norfolk does have its countryside with plenty of empty twisty roads but its very flat round here and get boring very quickly. Its also tractor land so we often get stuck behind one

That was taken in Yorkshire in an area called the Lake District.

What are the roads like over there? Hope you have some twisties as we're considering emigrating to Oz one day.

In all honesty I would recommend a single turbo conversion with that configuration.
Mine is a 2005 USDM STI conversion with forged internals. Not cheap, but it's run faultlessly and offered pretty good fun.

Hi Mate,
Nice car.  It's what I'm converting my car to.  Starting with a Gen3 Heritage Wagon and going to GTB.  What year is your Car.

I can pick yours is a Gen3 shell, but the interior looks to me like it's a Gen2 as it looks nothing like mine.

KDogg (spelling?) on here has done exactly what you're talking about but to a sedan.  He's dropped in an EJ257 into a B4 sedan.  He got the ECU reflashed with ECUTEK and it seems to be running well.  If you have a look at what KDogg's done, it might give you some ideas.

Cheers
Darryl

Yes quite right. The interior shot is when I picked the new short motor up in my Impreza...

Everyone I speak to keeps telling me the same thing but I really don't want to spend too much just yet until I'm sure I like the car.

If I do like the car and decide to keep it I'll start collecting bits (turbo, injectors, pump, fmic etc) then slap them all on in one hit.

Cheers djb - I'll search Kdogs posts.

Cos those holes are supposed to be there, NOT!!!

GL with it all.  Why not pull the engine out and put the block on an engine stand and strip it on that?

Cheers
