My Beast

  Top of Page

Hey Guys,

Just a hello from a new member.

I bought my 2001 B4 about 2 years ago now. Very clean, Black, manual, 59k on the clock.

I had some issue's with the clutch shuddering really badley and the air con sqeeling when it would turn on. I had the car back to the dealer (which will remain nameless, but lets just say its a very well know Sti dealer!) 7 or 8 times. I was told multiple stories on the clutch, and apparently it had a BRAND new one installed just before i bought it. In total it has had 3 different clutch's put it. While it was in there they scratched my drivers mirror, massive scratch that pealed the plastic back.

I had installed the Haltech Interceptor just before the 2nd last time in went it to get the clutch. It was running awesome!! THEN my wife drove it home and it was making a 'funny' noise. When she got it home, i noticed that it was making a weird tappet like noise. So i went up to go get dinner and all was fine except for the rattle like noise, which the cltuch used to make when driving. So i thought that it was the Bloody clutch again!!. So i turned the water spray on and turned left up a hill in 2nd gear and booted it. It got to about 3,000 rpm and started to surge and then before it could go another 500 rpm it went BANG,CLANG..... RATTLE RATTLE etc etc.

Long story short, big end bearing had failed. So a full rebuild was in order. I ended up taking the subaru dealership to Fair trading, and they ended up paying me $1500. That was all nice but the rebuild cost me $8,500. Now i did get ripped off hugely with labour, but hey canna do anything about it now.

So the motor got rebuilt with the following stuff

* 2.5 litre new subaru crank
* Crower Billet forged racing rods. 2.2L stroker
* Arias Forged pistons 2.2 L stroker.
* ACL race bearings.
* All new subaru gaskets.

I got 155kw atw on the haltch dyno, in 4th gear.

So thats the MYB-42T story.

Cheers
Daniel

Hey Dan

Funny (bloody awful) to hear your story but I thought I'd share with you that my 2 YEAR OLD [/B]Liberty GT wagon did a big-end bearing 1 month ago with ONLY 47,000 on the clock!

They fixed it under warranty (a WHOLE new bottom end) and as it was free, I was very happy but STI Melbourne said it was roughly nearly 16K worth of work if not covered. Go figure...

Anyway, seems as good as new now, and I've got a car that has new rings and pistons. I though Subarus were 'sposed to be indestructible?

Anyone got similar horror stories?

Which hills mate? The big blue ones? tongue

Just interested in what eventually fixed your clutch shudder? My RX has a fair bit of clutch shudder when the clutch is cold, but several people have told me that its because a higher pressure pressure plate has been installed :Dntknw:

by the hills i mean castle hill!!!!!!!!!

With the shudder its not completly fixed!!! i had the master and slave cylinder rebuilt and that made a huge difference. But i think my actual clutch is crap, they never got it right and its still not right!!!
