My 2.5 RX Wants To Be A Diesel ?

Hey guys,

When i purchased my car, one of the things i noticed was noisy lifters (Hence the diesel sound when it starts)

My dad and i did an oil change not long after we got it home, and whilst changing we put a engine cleaner through it and a lifter tappety stopper thing as well haha

This all helped... for about a week.

So.... i have returned here to see if any of you awesome people could help me resolve thee issue big_smile

Is it just a matter of putting another engine cleaner through next oil clean? (Put full Synthetic in, so will be awhile before next change)

Or do lifters etc. need replacing? Whats the dealliooo?

Should i upload a vid with noises to assist?

Any specific engine i should keep my out for?

It's got a EJ251 in it now, just look for the same?

Try using thicker oil? i found that the N/A 2.5L dont like thin oils. try that

Ahh ok, even with a sort of low K car?

Just put in Full Synth 5-30, so won't be changed for a while.

Is there anything you can advice for the next change haha?

just run a semi 10/40 after all its a 2.5N/A , save your self the coin , magnatec is a good oil. unless you've got a snail strapped on,
i use CASTROL EDGE SPORT 0W-40 in my lib , cant fault that , and multitrax in the box.

try a 50w for worn engines , bout 40 bucks for the bottle , drain your new oil into a bottle and run the 50W see if it changes it ,

I'm using Castrol Edge now (Was on special couple weeks ago)

When i get the time, i shall try the thicker stooof and hopefully it will help haha!

Don't use 0w in a Subaru... been stressed multiple times, causes glazed bores. Subaru motors, especially the EJ series, like thicker oil.

5w30 made my valve train noisy, the same noise you describe until I got down the road a bit and it had warmed up.

Last service I put in 10w40 Nulon Full Synthetic and it no longer makes the ticking on a cold start, it runs much better in general actually.

I would recommend something like Magnatec 10w40 for your NA, it has been recommended for mine too, but I wanted to try something different. You wouldn't even need a Semi for a NA though. Definitely thicken it up a bit, I'd say the cause of your noise is the thinner oil and just an aging engine. Sticky lifters is a common problem with Subaru motors.

Not a mechanic or a pro, just read a lot of forums and had a bad experience with the Edge 5w30 in mine tongue

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but i though i would share my findings smile

After using a Liqui Moly Lifter unclogged (forget what the actual name is) for about 1000k's the noise seems to have stopped almost completely.

Also, a few tanks of 98 to clean out the engine and a couple fuel system cleaners (can highly recommend Nulon products) my car now start nearly straight away, even on premium and runs beautifully. Previous owner had done a lot of short trips, which is the main cause of a gummed up engine.

Thirdly, today i chucked some Nulon G70 Manual Gearbox & Diff Treatment into my manual trans, and wow what a difference it's made! Everything just feels smooth and the gear stick easily glides into gears, where it used to sort of feel sticky?

And lastly... I had a torn steering rack boot so off to Subaru service center to get a new one... But for a set of boots they charge $85.27!!!!! Popped around the corner to Bursons, where the same boot cost me $10, and came with cable ties as well big_smile So, if you need to replace a steering rack boot, hit up Bursons first tongue

Hope this info can help someone make their car just that little bit better for the daily drive big_smile
