Mitsubishi Closes

Mitsubishi Australia is to close their Adelaide Plant.
That's go to hurt the local car industry.
Thoughts?

Sold the Subaru, replaced it with a Honda.. but all I know is Subaru's! (and Holden V8's of course):secret:

Re: Mitsubishi Closes

Cant be good for the parts suppliers obviously. What if ya make parts for three manufactures and are running on wafer thin margins and ya loose a third of ya work? Not viable anymore perhaps. Might put a few suppliers out of business which will put more pressure on the remaining manufactures.
In the cold hard light of day how long has the falcon got left in it?

Feel real sorry for all the people that work there.
I reckon Mitsu will be really unpopular and take a very big dive in australia
after this. Turns me off i was looking for a new car. ( not that i would buy a mitsu anyway.)

Re: Mitsubishi Closes

Ouch that has to be a big hit to Mitsu Australia. Obviously they bet a bit too highly on a very bland car (380) without any other cards up their sleeves... Still, they definitely used to churn out some trusty reliable cars and kept a lot of people employed. Shame to see them go.

100% agree with you XoN

I was expecting this to happen when they released the 380 saying that "it will be the car that will save Mitsubishi Australia!"

They were completely wrong! why?

1 They are quite ugly
2 Won't compare to Falcon or Commodore

Also the 380 is just an American Galant and from what I've heard is making really poor sales.

I think they should have brought out that supercharged version there were going to release and made it awd.

I do feel sorry for all the workers that worked there.

I'm 80% sure that the plant only made Mitsubishi's.

I'm sure subaru will be fine.......unless the car designers take more drugs and make more ugly cars like the Tribeca

Ah yes the only way to appreciate it.
Although in the flesh the new STI looks only half puss.
To one of the previous posters, I was watching a TV show and a Galant came into shot and it looked exactly like the 380, so not much Aussie input into that car me thinks.

Re: Mitsubishi Closes

This is a shame sad but it was inevitable realy, production was down to only 10,000 cars a year compared to holdens 107,000 and toyota's 130,000, holden exports just over 40,000 cars a year at present.
Ford is the next manufacturer that will be in need of change. They have already canned the export idea for the Orion platform falcon.. and as you all know they will be importing American made V6 engines and killing off the Inline 6 within a few years, they have also cut down on their falcon variant range.
They are how-ever inceasing production of locally produced focus's to try and make up for the slump in falcon sales.

It is the same car, and this will continue to be produced in the USA, there is a face lift model coming out pretty soon, it looks pretty horrible really, they have added some creases to the bonnet and slightly altered the front end.

The idiots should be producing the Mondeo here as that is the most rapidly growing market segment in this country. They may well go the way of mitsubishi if they don't start looking at new business solutions.
Why are no companies in this country spending money on R&D hybrid technology. The future market would be endless.
I understand it is an expensive exercise, but what a huge thing that would be for this country.

Re: Mitsubishi Closes

I don't beleive that Hybrids will be too far off in the holden department, GM have launched a hybrid in the US already, I can't for the life of me remember what it was callled but I will have a look for the press release tomorrow.

Just got this through email from Mitsubishi NZ

Media Release

AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTION OF MITSUBISHI 380 SEDAN TO END AS LARGE CAR MARKET CONTRACTS

5 February 2008

Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd (MMAL) together with its parent company Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has announced that its production facility in Australia, which manufactures only the large 380 sedan, will cease operations from the end of March.

No other products in the Mitsubishi range will be affected by this decision which will see MMAL move from an importer and manufacturer to a full-line importer.

Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand Ltd (MMNZ) managing director John Leighton said, “Sales growth of new Mitsubishi product in both Australia and New Zealand has been impressive over the past year. However, it is an inescapable fact that there is a deepening trend away from large cars. The 380 sedan now represents only a very small proportion of Mitsubishi new vehicle sales in New Zealand.

To reassure New Zealand customers about the future of their 380 models, MMNZ has extended the warranties of all past and future, private and small business buyers of new 380’s, from the current three years out to five years unlimited kilometres.

“I am sure the two year warranty extension allays any customer concerns about our commitment and ongoing support for this award winning car,” Mr Leighton said.

“Mitsubishi remains focused on further growth in the New Zealand market. We have a comprehensive model range – Outlander, Lancer, Pajero, Colt, Colt Plus, i-car, Triton and L300 Van, with more new products to come, confirming our long-term presence and growth aspirations in New Zealand,” he said.

Re: Mitsubishi Closes

I heard on the news this morning when they were saying "an announcement will be made today re: possible closure of the plant" that this plant was only running at 1/3 capacity anyway, there just wasn't enough demand for the (ugly-ass) 380 i guess.

Why build such a big factory to only run at 1/3 capacity??

Hope the guys there get a decent payout.

Should do as its only one plant closing and not Mitsu itself.

Re: Mitsubishi Closes

Sorry to see such a loss to workers, the economy, etc.

But the bigwigs at Mitsu should have been sacked a long time ago.

Cars like the 380 should have never made it to production. With soaring petrol prices from long ago, they should have capitalised on the diesel/LPG market like the others have overseas.

A diesel Lancer could have been a saving grace for them.
