  Top of Page

hey guy's posted this on rslibclub aswel just seeing if anyone on here can help.
Im wondering what people had to do when they did there conversion in terms of making it legal and things i searched a bit but couldn't find exactly the info i wanted.
Im in Victoria so anyone that has done a conversion on say there liberty with maybe a wrx front cut then i would like to hear what ytou had to do..
im planning on doing a conversion to my 94 GEN 2 lib GX with a 93 JDM wrx running gear, also read that the engine cant be older then the car is that true???
even if your from another state i would like to know what you had to do..
thanks
Josh

I am pretty sure in Vic, as long at the engine was in the same model car as yours, IE, if it was in another Gen 2, then you just need to change the engine number at Vic roads.

thats what i thought Mickey but as it's a wrx it may need an engineer cert but i could also same to them that the GEN 2 came out with a 2 ltr just wont say it was a 2ltr twin turbo smile

dylan f whats the new engine going into yours wrx or twin turbo GT/GTB/RS???

Remember there was no Aus delivered twin turbo gen 2.

Which could be a hurdle

that is true, mmm how much is it to get someone to look over the car and give it an engineer's certificate?

:-) Same as the RS anyway I believe, just was strapped in to a different chassis.

I don't believe any problems are encountered when people drop Jap spec EJ20t's in to their Libs, so I don't see why mine should be so different.

Put simply, a turbo increases the engine capacity according to the goons, increase the capacity more than 10% from memory and you need certs, this includes upgrading obvious stuff like brakes of course, so if you want to convert properly, you are best to use a half cut and transfer everything mechanical, I don't reckon you can go wrong then.

Also, who increases power from 90 odd kw ATW to 130 odd kw ATW and wouldn't upgrade the brakes anyway, plenty I'm sure, but please don't be the one to hit high speeds and then not be able to stop safely, I've seen plenty of those and it's not pretty.

Paul

Here in SA you have to submit an "Application to modify a vehicle".  This has to be lodged with Regency.  The form asks what type of engine you've got, what you'll be going with and what brakes you propose to put on it.

Once submitted the guys at TransportSA come up with a few other requirements (18 in my case) and write a letter back to you telling you what you have to do.  I don't need an engineers certificate or anything so long as I stick to what they ask for.  Things include a noise test, an emissions test, ensuring that the intake and fuel delivery system remains stock, etc.......

Once I finish, I book the car in at Regency for an inspection so the guys can check that I've modified the car according to what the records say I should and I'm done.  This should be happening in just a few weeks so I'll let you all know how I go.

Cheers
Darryl

i know the thread died a while ago, but has anyone come to a conclusion on whether a cert is needed, and if it is, what needs to be done?

if i cant sell my lib then i'll do a wrx conversion, but i want to know if i can get it all legal

thanks heaps

i'll be emailing a few engineers anyway, so what i find out i'll post up here

In tassie we have to apply for it, which was all approved and sent back to me within 10 days (very much to my surprise)

From there we did the conversion (g1s1 GX with JDM 94 wrx halfcut) and took it to an engineer, from there they basically make sure all the engine numbers match up with what you presented in your application form. Then they simply bolt on a Mod plate making it legal.

Cost me $50 bucks.

50 bucks, thats awesome. i rekon it'd cost $700ish for the plate to be bolted here in Melbourne.

Re: making your conversion legal...

the reason it was so cheap was apparently because someone else had done the conversion before thus making a precedent, which means a whole heap of other stuff didn't have to be checked and it only taking 10 minutes.

Re: making your conversion legal...

ok, i spoke to an old high school teacher of mine who is an auto engineer.

He told me that because the motor is from the same manufacturer, and was an option somewhere in the world, that the conversion does not need to be engineered. Just as long as you take it to VicRoads for an inspection and supply the paperwork that is needed.

Since i have an RX, which has the cross-member, brakes and everything else needed for a turbo conversion already done at factory, it gives me creditability when i do the conversion

hope this helps out, i will still be ringing around for more opinions

When I did my conversion, all I had to do was notify Vicroads of the engine change. When I went to vicroads I showed them the receipt of the new engine with engine number listed. And that's it.

Very easy process and it didn't cost me a thing.
