Lots of gearstick play

  Top of Page

Hey guys/girls.

I seem to have a fair amount of side-side play with the gearstick. It stays in gear so theres no dramas there, but was wondering if there is a series of rubber bushes that can be replaced to make it a firmer feeling. I had similar troubles with my old Mr Sh1ti Galant. I just replaced a couple of the bushes and she was good as new.

Yeah mate, there are some bushes. Not 100% on how many or were they are. But they're there big_smile.

i think there is one at the base of the shifter, which is the culprit. Again not 100%.

Re: Lots of gearstick play

Theres 2 bushes where the stick levers (just under the g/stick boot), 1 where it attaches to the trans tunnel, 1 where it attaches to the g/box (but aftermarket come as 2 pieces for ease of install, if you've tried to take out an old 1, you'll know what I mean....) and another 2 where they join the selector shaft.

Kartboy make the 2 main ones, the front and rear bushings (the one in the trans tunnel and on the gearbox).
Those 2 make the gearshifts more stable and solid, great improvement.

The other 4, not 100%, but I think they are the same (thats if you can pull apart the uni type arrangement that goes on the slector shaft), TiC (Turn in Concepts) has them, theres 2 different lengths between cars and years.
Those just add to the solid feel, not as much of a must as the other 2, but noticeable.

Have fun trying trying to get them here without paying some stoopid amount of money, the vendors here are abit of a rip.....
And they always try and blame the postage (you can work out the posatge yourself on USPS.com) or the taxes (don't people know how to mark stuff as samples/gifts and have a value of $50USD?).

Not sure if the Gen2 bushes are the same as Gen1, but I just replaced the 6 nylon bushes and 2 rubber mounts in my missus's RS the other week. Genuine Subaru parts set me back around $110 from memory and shift feels like new. About an hour to install.

Hmmmmm. Well, I've just had a new developement. I seem to think the syncros are starting to have trouble. So now I'll have to make the decision to repair ($2600) or replace.

I'm not really in the mood for repairs as the car will still be seeing the drag strip a fair bit.  I've read up on 6 spds but from what I've seen/read, I don't think its what I want. I seem to be leaning more to a straightcut 5 spd. Am waiting to hear back responses from PAR and also PPG. Its something I can't really afford just yet but I want to fix it before it really ****s itself.  I'm not going to be racing anytime soon until I have it all sorted out.:stop:

If your getting straight cuts, just get 1st to 4th, leave 5th as a normal, unless your never going to go above 100kmh on a public road, then get the whole lot done.

How often to these gear boxes loose 4th or 5th?
I've heard plenty of stories of 2nd and 3rd dying how ever. Is there a reason you'd want straight cut 4th or 5th?

I'd think Helical would be more daily friendly, and strong enough.

What happened to the old SOO081???? Hahahahaha.

I meant I would be sticking with the 5 spd box over the 6 spds. And yes I would be getting the straightcuts 1-4. Have to price it all up firstly but.  Alex, Fatcats box set him back $2600 to repair on his B4, is this a similar price to what you paid to fix the syncros on your box???

Helical gears are straight cut, but on an angle, if that makes sense. Which makes the gear stronger than a normal one, but it is slightly more noisy. Not like a straight cut how ever.

Pictures can explain better.
Helical:

Straight cut:

Standard gears are similar to helicals, but have a curve in the teeth.

Re: Lots of gearstick play

PAR 1-4 straight cut your are looking at $4500, this isnt including the replacement of bearings and syncro's

whereas PPG's price is close to $6500 for 1-4 straight cut.

then there is the option of upgrading the selector forks( more money)

have a look on rexnet for 2nd hand straight cut box's

have you considerd 1-2 straight cut  3-4 helical?

Re: Lots of gearstick play

not quite soop.

aftermarket helical gears are stronger and slightly noisy because they have a much larger tooth and on a slightly lesser angle to the std helical gears. which are designed to keep noise down.

straight cut are supposed to be stronger, but i dont know of anyone whos broken a PPG or PAR helical gear through abuse, only seen them destroyed after other broken bits of metal get stuck in the gears.... munch

for 6 months maybe, then the novelty will wear off and you wished you would of had that 6 speed getting killer economy on the freeway noise free.

Get a 6 speed Jarrod. Or at least test drive one before you decide, they're a very nice gearbox.

my gtb is my daily for the last few months and few to come, and the DOG engagement becomes a pain in city traffic, but the whine just doesnt get annoying. (unless youve got a hangover, then the whole car is a pain)

if i didnt have drag racing in the back of the mind then i would consider a 6 sp, but the ease of a 5sp thats unbreakable and gets people thinkin youve got sand in the gearbox is just too great.

So whats the straight cuts like on the highway?
That would be my #1 concern as 95% of my driving is at 100kmh on the highway.

Soop.

Thanks for the gearbox lesson, but it wasn't required.

I am just questioning your input. I mean, you don't own a turbo subaru, you don't own a turbo gearbox, you have no experience in such gearboxes, or breaking them for that matter. You read about it, yes, but first hand experience is better than secondhand hearsay garbage you've read off the internet.

I for one, am growing very tired of this practice.

In future, please reserve your comments to the scope of knowledge you actually have experience in.

Thanks.

Pfffft. Learn how to race properly then Nick:lol::beee:

As Billsy has said, and I already knew this as well, the cost of a 6 spd is similar to a 5spd dogbox. However, then you need change the other bits and pieces which is more money I don't want to spend at the moment. If all my driving was on the highway, then sure, maybe a 6 spd. But due to my love of 1/4 mile racing, I feel the 5spd dogbox would be the perfect match.

Lance, have already search thru Rexnet and eBay.

I can't afford the box just yet, as I need the money for it. If anyone is interested in sponsoring the car, (*cough* AMAuto *cough*:Pardon:) then please feel free to donate to a worthy cause.

Alex what was your first day of work like? Did everyone tell you to get f**ked because everything you knew you read in books?
Just because somebody has no experience with a turbo subaru doesn't mean thee have no experience with turbos at all. Likewise, just because somebody doesn't currently have a straightcut gearbox doesn't mean they never have, or have no experience with them.
