Hi everyone I'm neew to the site and found it searching for how to's for helping me do work on two Subarus in the family a 1999 WRX and a Liberty. Im going to change the water pump on our 1996 Liberty GX 2.2 litre EJ22 and would like to know if anyone has any hints regarding removal and replacement of the timing belt. eg which is the best position to have the crankshaft and do you have to lock up any of the cam shafts to stop them moving. Any hints much appreciated.  Regards

top dead centre is the best spot to have the crankshaft. go buy the liberty haynes manual its around $30 and has all the information you need. obviously the job is a lot easier if you can get the engine out of the car if possible.

Hey dude,
its not too difficult of a job if you take the radiator/fans out.

You'll definatley want to get a sheet that has a timing belt guide on it to tell you what position the cams need to be in relation to the crank. There will be marks on the cam gears and also on the crank these all need to line up to their corresponding marks ( this would all be detailed the diagram/manual ) just make sure you are careful when you put the new timing belt on to make sure that everything is lined up as it should be and that there is no slack in the timing belt. If the timing belt is even 1 tooth out on one of the gears you could be in for problems.:comando:

Thanks everyone, bought the haynes book today and had previously removed fans and covers except for the Crank pulley. Will have a go tomorrow.
