Liberty Heater Core

  Top of Page

Hi Guys,

Now i have a problem, hopefully i make sense here.

about 6 months ago i brought my self a 2000 Gen 3 Liberty, had full service history at Subaru well looked after really happy with the purchase, Although 1 month ago i have had massive problems with my cooling system i ended up replacing radiator, thermostat, all hoses, water pump and other things. So now lies the problem my head gasket is going where its letting air into the cooling system and  the heater core is also buggered.

i have brought the Genuine parts from Japan as they are way to expensive in Aus. So anyway i have taken the whole dash apart to get to the Heater core housing and became stuck! i cannot seem to get the White Heater core box out as it interlocks with the A/C Black box. I was told that the A/C box unscrews and you can pull it apart (just the bottom half) so shown with the arrows in the photo below.

Now my question is can i do this job without discharging the A/C Gas? how do i get the white box out? my last resort is get it towed to Subaru and get them to finish it but it will cost me an arm and a leg!

If anyone could please point me in the right direction that would be excellent!

Thanks
Angus

By the way ignore the support bar, Steering and Airbag as i had to steer/ roll the car back into the garage i will dismantle that once i get started again

im pretty sure it will come apart without D/Cing the ac unit i have a destruction guide here somewhere if u need it , but if u need to

the A/c gas will be R134A from memory , undo the flare on the AC compressor to dump the charge( your supposed to reclaim the gas ) , you will need to have this regased ,

, always tape up the dissconnected pipes , you dont want moisture getting in your ac system.

Hi Guys i successfully completed the heater core last night, after 1 hour of swearing, hitting and pulling the heater core box it came free from the A/C box, although i lost my A/C gas, which i could of prevented, but in the end worst job to do and re-gas is only $120 compared to getting the whole job for over $1000

cheers

couldnt have prevented the loss of a/c gas... but i could have done it all for you about $550. and who quoted you $1000? if i supplied the core it would have been tops around $700 max....
time frame for me to do it in would be 3 hours max. i drop the dash out is an hour...

Subaru quoted me around that figure, but i managed it, i just had to wiggle the A/C box around a bit to get the heater core box out. and the gas went pshhhhhh.

so i shall finish it off tonight putting the dash back and get it re-gased tomorrow anything i should be aware off when re-gasing liberty's? will they suddenly go this will also cost $9328409283490823098

Cheers

I put it all back together I just cracked the o-ring i think its called, but it only cost me a re-gas for $120, and they replaced the ring for free, works great now!
