Dunno about later models but the 4wd in the Gen1 is described (by the manual) as an all-road, not off-road system.

Given a flat, solid beach though, i doubt you'd have a problem. Keep out of the soft stuff or you'll have fun getting out, road tyres and SFA clearance won't help you any.

Hard flat sand should see you fine... take a walk on it first. If your footprints are barely leaving a depression you will be a-ok. Hard flat sand is actually very very hard... (you know how it hurts when you stomp on it..)

it should be alright,

stick some outback springs in your car..lol

na, just watch out, if cars are already driving on it, have a talk to them and see if their car is leaving deep or shallow prints, you shold be right, just dont go too close to the water or bye bye car

Tis very true.. im just hanging to drop the clutch at 8000rpm and let it fire up on the sand. see how the old girl holds up her grip and actually give the 4wd system some use

Haye yo spoil the party but not the best idea as sand and the bottom of your car and engine bay is not a great combination.. just something to consider. you will need to clean the underside well if you want your car to last.

Re: Liberty for 4WDing

Those pictures are freaking awesome.

Hey XXB4XX I'm not going to tow you out of the sand dunes @ Kurnell, but I'll come and watch u roll it

:help:

But for some technical information from Subaru - Manual Transmission

"During straight line driving the torque split by the differential is 50/50 to front and rear wheels. Torque distribution at the road however is also dependent on load distribution and tyre grip and as a result the static ratio is 60/40.

During actual driving conditions load movement when cornering, accelerating or braking etc. causes the torque distribution to also move in the same proportions.

When wheel slip occurs a rotational speed difference between the front and rear axles is created and the viscous coupling automatically matches the torque to grip in order to restore maximum traction."

When are we going?

Re: Liberty for 4WDing

The turbos did the better slides but even the NA Libertys did fantasticly on the sand. No preparation needed - just drive straight onto the beach!

I was in the white Gen4 smile

Tip: don't leave your windows and sunroof open, took a while to vaccum all the sand out when we got home tongue

Re: Liberty for 4WDing

HaHa, love the big pic of my plough, apart from still finding sand, no harm done..........I built this thing to have a bit of fun, not priss around with my bonnet up all day showing off my bling,
if it breaks I'll fix it & if it don't I won'tsmile
One thing I will say is I had a Landcruiser with 12.5" wide ( 50 inches pluss, when baggad out ) tyres for 8 years before I built this car & with 38 lb in my tyres it will crap all over the Cruiser with 18 lb in it's.
I thought the cruiser would & usually did go anywhere but these really are amazing & almost un-bogable even in the soft crap.
