LIBER STI

  Top of Page

Ok. I am going to try and do what Mark (CRUISIN) has done and start a project thread.

My names Julian i am 20 and i own a 1997 green gen 2 Subaru Liberty RX sedan.

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/julianwood89/frontclear.jpg

I bought it off a guy who had it for 2 months who bought it off AL at AM AUTO. Yes you all know about AL, he is a master of the STI engine into libertys. I am lucky enough to have him as my great mechanic and greatful that he did some awesome work to my car before i got it in my hands.

Here are the details:

Engine conversion carried out by am auto. Most parts out of a Ver 4 STi. Still using the standard rx gearbox

EJ20t

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/julianwood89/engine-1.jpg

-Legacy GTB block (same 205kw sti spec anyway)
-STi manifold
-STi Heads
-STi crank shaft
-STi crank bearings, big end bearing
-Forged STi pistons
-3 inch exhaust to Xforce Varex canon muffler  (volume control for stealth)
-Custom FMIC
-Custom cold air intake
-TD05 turbo (16g small off 95-98 wrx) (bigger than standard td04)
-K&N Pod filter
-Apexi Boost gauge
-HD Daiken clutch
-Walbro 550hp in tank fuel pump
-Wrx ecu with a mines flash tune
-GFB Boost controller running at 14psi
-Suspension setup is stock apart from some dodgy springs that makes it a little lower.
-16" Gen 3 RX wheels

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/julianwood89/stock.jpg When i got it.

This car is unique in every way. It has full leather seats/door cards front and back (miles tells me the first owner got it as a factory option). It has a STi badge on the front, i have tinted the windows to 18% all round and purchased some plates 25IOW (too slow). The dash is modified with a blue backlight display which looks wicked at night, it has an Apexi boost gauge, JVC doubledin 7 inch DVD player (fits perfect between the wood grain) and i am treated to a STi 5 speed short shifter.

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/julianwood89/front.jpg

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/julianwood89/leather.jpg

A lot of work has been done to this car when it was with AMAUTO. Most of the parts are upgraded to the STi standard or better.

The RX model is a great car. It has the standard MOMO wheel, leather trim, climate control, cruise control, power windows etc etc. But what makes my car so great is that it has a Xforce Varex canon that can make your car completely silent. Around town you can hear it coming from blocks away, but with the exhaust closed it is silent as an excel. It is great for highway driving and keeps police attention to a minimum.

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/julianwood89/Rxstockinterior.jpg for a 1997 still considered nice

When i bought it, i was very happy with the power. I had some cash at the time and AM gave it some more goodness and ditched the sti tmic replaced with a fully custom FMIC with in guard CAI (not running bov just very loud flutters). There fabrication work is great i highly recommend it.

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/julianwood89/howitcame.jpg How it came in my hands

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/julianwood89/photoshopwithlogos.jpg am goodness with photoshop

So there it is. I will be adding more pictures and detailed progress as i go. I hope you can get the same amount of pleasure in reading this as i do reading about other peoples libertys (cough cough CRUISIN)

Future modifications include a Haltech E8 and a map sensor, 440cc yellow top sti injectors, take it to Matthew Spry @ PITS tuning and my goal is 200awkw. hopefully i can get there, i might have to crank up the boost to 20psi which i am not scared about because it has forgies smile. I might have to upgrade my turbo because i think it is a TD05 16g small (AL will have to clarify that one) which comes off the 97 wrx's they are a little bigger than the TD04's but still very small. I am also after some coilovers. I have done my research and AekOne might have found me some through Jason @ all things subaru. I am very pedantic and want to tidy up my paintwork but i think it is probably not worth the money, i just have to try and keep it shmick. It is my daily and is NOT stored in the garage which is annoying (mums 97 falcon gets treated lol) and i might hold off on shaving the boot to cover the small holes where the spoiler use to exist.

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/julianwood89/backneedcoilovers.jpg as you can see i need coilovers

If i was to spend more money on it i would be upgrading the gearbox, brakes, turbo. but i think i will just save for a 2008 Gen4 Liberty tuned by STi smile

I went to willowbank test n tune and did the quarter mile for the first time  a couple of months ago and ran a time of 13.7. I think that is pretty good for a heavy daily.

Ok im Out. enjoy.

Very nice mate..
Makes me miss my old car! (Green gen2 RX)
Definitely look into some coilies it will look good with those gaps closed up between the guard and the wheels.
I reckon get some different wheels too. Those Gen3 Rev A RX ones dont do it justice!

Oh, and get yo mums Falcon out of that garage!!!

Very nice looking gen2, although I'm personally not a fan of the de-winged look.
Pretty surprised that you've still go the RX gearbox in there though, you must drive pretty carefully!

Yes new wheels are on the cards. I took off the wing and mud flaps when i got it. I wanted that street look. I try and glide into every gear change without smashing it, i just hope it never goes bang!

Re: LIBER STI

Ahh very good guys, you’re both on to it!

Luke your correct, my car was originally a heritage so came without a spoiler. Gold star for you

Morgan you are also correct, it’s not an OEM RX spoiler, it’s a Talon BD9 aftermarket spoiler. Gold star for you

I’ve now got a Legacy boot lid with out a spoiler but it’s got the extra brake light above the rear garnish

ps: Thread Hijack over!

Xon, i VERY much doubt Al would have converted it and left the RX box in there...

i suspect the OP left the 'W' off the front of the 'RX'

He put a gen3 RX box in Tristan's H6 gen2. Granted it's only making 150-ish kw, but that's easily as much as a stock WRX.

Re: LIBER STI

So purchased a Haltech E8 Today!!!!!
http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo283/julianwood89/Haltech.jpg
Cant wait to get it tuned and make some power. Hopefully will reach 200awkw. Just need to purchase 440cc ver3 or 4 sti yellow top feed injectors, 3 bar map sensor, air temp sensor (no more afm) and im ready for the tune. getting it done by matthew spry at PITS pits.net.au recommended by Al and a lot of my mates/brother have been there and were very happy with the results.
In other news. Found out my front left spring has snapped so went to all the jap wreckers on the sunshine coast and no one had any coilovers for my car. Need new tyres as well.
Does anyone know if BG5 coilovers will fit? i think they do, but will spring rates be different? or doesnt it matter?

Re: LIBER STI

Fronts will fit but rears may be different. Also if your looking at heading up to 200kw, look at getting a new gearbox. Its not the nicest sound/feeling breaking a box. I smashed my v3 sti box after a while and the car had just over 200.

Re: LIBER STI

If your after a TD05-16G small, 8cm rear i think.

Its the standard turbo on evo 7's and 8's. Will probably be a few for sale on evolutionoz.net. If you can get a RS version with the titanium wheels will have even better response. Or a big 16G off the 6's and 9's makes a bit more power but is a lot larger in size.

Both turbos (especially the small) will be cheap as!
