Legacy GT / EJ20G with tappet noise

  Top of Page

Hi all, been a while away (got an L-series so been hanging around on Ausubau more) just looking at a Legacy GT (auto) grey import at the mo and have a few q's that I need help with:
- tappet noise on a 140,000km EJ20G (the original engine so I'm told), is the engine stuffed? I know on a NA EA-series engine it's par for the course and does do much damage, but on a EJ turbo engine is it bad?
- what price is fair for a grey import? needs a handful of stuff done to it but nothing major (or so it seems - what else should I look out for?)
- read up not long ago about people getting VicRoads letters asking for their grey import Legacy's to be brought in to be looked at again for reg issues, any updates? this one was bought from a dealer in Ballarat in about 2000, who was importing a lot at the time if that helps?

Cheers,

Cheers,
Tappet noise is pretty normal for these old Legacy engines.

But it doesnt mean its stuffed. Its just clogged oil galleries going to the hydraulic lifters.

A few things to you can do to alleviate it.

Oil Change and choice. Ive found fresh 5w30 Castrol Edge is good for clearing it up. Plus also add some Nulon E20.

Before you do the oil/filter change put 500ml of Diesel FUEL into the oil and run the engine at idle only for about 15 mins. It thins out the oil and flushes out the oil galleries. Then let it drain for a few hours.
Then put fresh 5w30 and E20 in and it should be a very quiet engine.

I did this on a recommendation of a friend and it completely shut my tappet noise up.

Thanks for the info on the tappets, now I'm looking for the engine number on the EJ20G, can't seem to find it anywhere in there and it's not on the rego sticker!!!! :scare2:
Where do I look?
& should I have problems with the rogo transfer if there's no engine # on the papers?
The VIN number is also just stamped on the left strut area of the engine bay, not on any plate, should alarm bells be ringing?
Appreciate all help offered, cheers

Just above the starter motor (passenger side)

Sounds like it's worth of a revs check or equivalent in your state. So it's currently out of rego at the moment?

if it is a personal import it should have a yellow compliance sticker and the original compliance plate should have been removed.  yes vin should be stamped or on a plate attached to either l or r strut towers...shane

Cheers for the info all, it was imported and sold on by a dealer/importer in Ballarat in 2000 as a grey import (with 40,000km on it hmmmm...), no yellow compliance sticker that i could find, and the VIN is just stamped into the chassis strut top, not on any plate. It still had rego, but was being sold w/out RWC (I'm in Vic) but had no engine number on the sticker, which seemed very odd. Looks a bit wrong, so I think I'll just keep on looking for B4's instead. Thanks for the help all.
