Learing Manual

  Top of Page

Today i stepped into my manual liberty for the first time attempting to master this intricate art.

I thought after ridding motorbikes for many years, that it would be a breeze, but starting from a standstill is quite a jerky process most of the time. I only drove for about 20mins, on the way to office works and back (stocking up on supplies, mainly paper and pens for HSC) but i still have much improvement to come.

Hopefully i will be ready to go for my P's again in a few weeks.

good luck, mate!

just drive with what is most comfortable for you, whether it be manual or auto. don't let your mates call you a pansy if you decide to go for auto.

good luck on ur P's mate, there a breeze tho, i got all nervous before i went for them, but its easyer than the L's test. i find when driving manuals its easyer to do everything alot slower when your just getting used to it.

good luck mate, im kinda in your position at the moment, i got used to driving the B4 (manual) almost perfect, smooth shifts+take offs. then the engine went. so i have been driving an auto 1.3ltr festiva for the past few months..and  its going to be fun getting back into the B4..and its going to have a harder clutch this time too..
and only 2 months till i go for My P's

what car are u driving in manual at the moment?

White MY02 B4. 2.5LTR, Garrett Turbo, Autronic ECU, PPG gearbox, Brembo brakes... Fun times

Re: Learing Manual

I got my license almost 20 years ago..  cars were a lot harder to drive back then I tell ya we used to walk 30 miles to school barefoot through snow and broken glass...

wink  I remember a good trick in learning smooth starts, you simply gotta think about how the car is going to move forward anyway (because it's in gear) so just let the clutch out real slow and use the gas only to keep it from stalling... then when it starts to roll on its own, drive on..

Anyway..  drive carefully and enjoy!

Re: Learing Manual

Im driving an RX. i had my auto RX but unfortunately wrote it off. So with the insurance payout we decided to by a manual RX. Ive never driven a manual before but i pretty much made the decision that i want to drive a manual because i was getting really bored of the sluggish auto.

My gear changes are pritty good, just need to work on my take offs as they are still jerky most times. I think its because im trying not to ride the clutch that much, and because im not experienced enough it isnt really working. But i should have it in the next week or so. (ive 2 exams on thursday, so i have to study and cant drive during the week...so spewing).

Re: Learing Manual

Nar i would definately do it, i know heaps of people that drive manual with an auto license and its very rare to be pulled up by cops unless you are doing sumthing stupid.

But i know i really need to study, so learing manual is just another distraction at the moment

off topic: do you just have extractors/headers  or do you have other exhaust mods aswell. bcuaz i will prob have some money after working in the skool hols and these $200-$250 extractors off ebay look great. But im only looking for a little bit of sound, not as much as ur car, just something subtle.

yeah extractors and cannon thats it. soon to be full catback tho, but with a lukey muffler under as well, so its not too loud.

Re: Learing Manual

ive probably driven about 4-5 hours of manual now, and have a test booked in for tuesday arvo.

Ive just been cruising around local streets most afternoons for half hour or so by myself and with dad every now and then, and am getting the hang of it. And my uncle got in the car with me the other nite and gave me a few more pointers, because he has been driving manual for years and can change gears smoother than an auto.

The only problem i ever has is when im first at the traffic lights, with cars behind me, i somtimes get abit anxious bcauz i have all the cars behind me and stall it. But i should be good. wish me luck haha

if you get anxious, just put your foot to the floor, when the you hit about 7000rpm let the clutch go...

Re: Learing Manual

believe me, in these cars the clutch wont be the first thing to go.. it will be everything associated with it..

Gearbox - shaft - Bearings - CV's etc..

this is the down side of having AWD

I think the teeth on first gear are generally the first to go :victory:

As for getting nervous, just pretend like they aren't there. Obviously not to the point where you roll back in to them though tongue If you can do it when no cars are there, there's no reason you can't do it with cars behind you.
