Just got car dyno'd (need new sparkies)

  Top of Page

I recently had my car dyno'd by Paul at Chasers Motorworks, I was able to get 193.8 atw on 21psi at a safe tune and was told on the same boost and tune level I could push the power to 200kw providing I got spark plugs with something like a .55mm gap compared to the .65 they're running at the moment.

What I wanted to know is if I do this will the car run like a dog when running low boost/until it hits full boost? and are there any drawback's of doing this?

Any help would be great

cheers.

Sounds like he is saying you need a colder burning spark plug. I had the same drama with mine after getting it above 200kw. Changed them up to a 7 series and this stopped the car banging away up at 7-8,000rpm. Also got my times a little quicker down the 1/4 mile.

As for driving like a pig, I can't say that I noticed anything dramatically different down low with my car. And 21psi???? What turbo are you running???

not sure if this is helpfull, but as far as im aware, smaller gap means more consistent spark, bigger gap means bigger spark.

my EJ22 is 1mm gap stock, but I've pushed it out to 1.05 for bigger spark=bigger bang?

would have thought u'd get a bigger gap to chase more power...

Bigger gap with a turbo running high boost will blow the spark out.

Better yet, grab an MSD ignition box - they're magic.

reducing the gap on the plugs is a bandaid fix to an ignition problem.  that gap is just way small. i would be keeping it at 0.8mm where it is supposed to be and getting some bosch coils and decent spiral leads and go from there. if you got bosch coils, then tell him to increase the dwell on them.  i am guessing you are running a powerFC or link?

Sorry for delayed reply, in response to generally everyone.

I am running a Apexi Power FC, I have Bosch Coils with Magnacor leads, however it is suspected the leads are in bad condition.

To 9880XR - that's more or less what I need to do, go up a heat range or 2 (I think I'm on 6 maybe 7 already) and reduce the gap by .05, and 21psi - I'm running a VF34 with P20 housing, turbo is capable of another 7 pound however it won't make much more power as it runs out of puff it might however fatten the band out a bit, so that will be explored... and if I blow it up, I'll move on to a td04z big_smile

To Vik - cheers for that, great read and has informed me much more!

cheers people.

Leads are pretty much brand new and are magne core or however you spell it

and have a 100K warranty on them

they have 10k on them

I doubt thats your issue

I had issues out at the drag strip up in the high revs with the car doing all weird kinds of things so thats when we replaced the spark plugs. I can't remember the exact numbers but I think it is a PRF7b or g series spark plug. Change them over and see how the motor runs then.

As for your turbo, its all good to increase the psi you run but we found that ~19psi was the best results we could get out of the VF23. But either way, good luck with it Chris. Change the spark plugs over and take it down the track so we can see what she'll do. :neo:

Thanks for the help mate, it's running beautifully atm with 193.8atw on the current sparkies, however when I get it serviced next I'll change the plugs over for either PRF7b or G series plugs depending on what my mechanic says, then I will definately push it too 200 maybe 205ish and see what she can do on the quarter!

Thanks again mate.
