Jerky Acceleration and Deceleration

  Top of Page

Hey Guys, I have a MY01 RX manual and the slightest press of the accelerator (from foot off the pedal) makes the car jerk quite a bit. The same thing happens if I lift my foot off the pedal.
Does anyone know what this could be???
I have had the car for a while now and it's really annoying me. If I use the clutch to ease the power on its ok.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think i know what u mean, i have the same car and possibly the same thing happening... its like there is lag in the drivetrain or something, but it only happens sometimes usually lower revs ie crusing at 60 in 4th... its not that jerky/noticable as i have learned to drive aroound it most of the time.

if you figure it out let me know... coz it is one of those things that is annoying when you know its there!

cheers

My B4 does it as well.  It's usually cos i am in the wrong gear for that speed.
Plus the AWD has no give in it and show's up your mistakes much more.
On down-shifts rev-matching will make it much smoother. Only if you get it right though.lol

Yeah I have learned to drive around it too. I just thought there might be some 'slack' so to speak in the driveline or something???
Any more ideas guys??

ha ha ha, I have exactly the same problem. Seems to happen when crawling in traffic a lot.

I have learn to deal with it cause i have seen a few people with the same thing happening.

Let me know how the extractors went and if they fixed the issue

hey all!
after driving around today turns out it still happens its just way less severe, almost not noticeable (unless u be a retard and put it in 5th going like 40!) when driving normally.

Id say its due to the increase in torque down low from the extractors, which would also explain y hawks b4 does it... however i am no expert so dont quote me, do correct me if im wrong tho!

i have it too, i think its just the way our cars are

but if i'm lazy and the car jerks because i'm not smooth enough, i sometimes can get the feeling passengers think i'm a crappy driver

Clean out the intake manifold, throttle body, IACV etc etc with SA459 (upper cylinder cleaner) then reset the ECU.

Hi There,If you contact your dealer you can ask them for the price of a ADDA kit and fit it yourself or you can contact them to get a FLASHWRITE (reprogram through select monitor) which will also cure this. The reason you are feeling this is the stepper motor graduations are too big hence the sensation, the kit will reduce this and wont be as harsh.Hope this helps.Cheers Eddie

Hey Eddie so with the FLASHWRITE thing, do they just plug into the ECU or something??

Hi Jarrad,
Basically it is a ECU reflash from the factory.I don`t know how much the dealer will charge as alot of them don`t know it is available to them.I found it by accident when i was mucking around with the scan tool.I tried it on my car and it made it better. The ADDA kit is better again but i think it is expensive @$300 for the part only.Subaru were doing them under warranty or customers that were complaining but not everyone did.If you are the original owner you might have a shot. If  you need anymore info just ask.Cheers Eddie

Re: Jerky Acceleration and Deceleration

It was a kit that Subaru developed for the GEN3,it stands for accel-decel,decel accel (acceleration deceleration).Like i said not everyone complained of this issue with their cars so that is why not all dealers know of it.It comprises of some hose, fittings and a air slide from a Bosch K JETRONIC mechanical injection system and the appropriate wiring. It basically helps the stepper motors operation.Hope this helps.

Nah Im the second owner so the warranty thing is out the window. I might see the local dealership about the cost of a reflash this week.
Thanks Eddie.

If the dealer is too expensive you can ring your local EFI parts supplier and get a price on a air slide to suit a 1985 240 Volvo (it can be any euro car of that era that has K jetronic) and you might be able to make the kit yourself if i can find the instructions.Let me know either way.

Cheers Eddie

My Gen 3 RX had the same problem and I took it back to the dealer twice and both times they didn't fix it. They thought it was a problem with the drive shaft and the rear diff. Great work Subaru Doncaster  :***: they never fixed it and I gave up and dealt with it. I agree it was embarrassing at times coz ppl thought I couldn't drive lol. Ah well some cokhead relieved me of that car anyway and ***ed it more than it was, I bet the jerkiness would've been the least of my problems if the insurance company decided to repair!

Re: Jerky Acceleration and Deceleration

I'm not sure if this is the same issue spoken of above, or if it is different again...

When I accelerate hard (if I put my foot to the floor) and don't change before about 3000rpm it starts shuddering, I find it hard to describe. But it's like the power is fluctuating, almost like if you were to put your foot on and off the accelerator quickly over and over...it's starting to annoy me and has only just started happening about two weeks ago...

Has anybody else had something like this? I know it definitely happens in 2nd and 3rd gears, and generally above about 3500rpm range. It doesn't happen all the time though, which confuses me more. I haven't worked out if it happens when the car heats up maybe...

Re: Jerky Acceleration and Deceleration

Ok...it has not gotten worse and is doing it constantly...and the problem is that it is only firing on 3 cylinders. Crap. So really hoping it's nothing too serious...but rather just a plug or lead...otherwise I don't want to know what I'm up for.

Why can't I have kept my old Impreza...I had it since new, I knew it was always serviced and ran without any problems...but no, some silly woman had to pull out in front of me and write it off. Grr!!

Hi.Pull the leads off at the coilpack and check for arcing and signs of it(1 terminal will be darker). You might be able to salvage the leads but there is a good chance the leads/coilpack are fried. If you want to test the coi;pack grab a multimeter and test the secondary coils for resistance.

Cheers

Thanks for that info youngy. I had a look and sure enough, terminal 1 is corroded looking. I'll continue investigation later when I can get a friend to help test the coil pack out.

Once again, thanks heaps. Should hopefully save me having to send it in to Subaru to pay exorbitant amounts to have it fixed.
