Is this a good deal? 2005 SUBARU LIBERTY 4GEN MY05 AWD

  Top of Page

Hey guys. I'm a week away from my P's test and really want a Liberty. Luckily my parents are paying half for my car. I was wondering if this is a good deal?

2005 SUBARU LIBERTY 4GEN MY05 AWD $15 000

5 speed manual

Kilometres: 87,500

Engine: 4 cylinder Unleaded Aspirated 2.5 L (2457cc)

Colour: Obsidian (Black)

It is very good condition. Never been in an accident, serviced by Subaru etc.

Might also want to consider that its due for its 100k service in 6mths or so, depending how much you drive.

I'd hover between 13-14 depending on whether it has Leather interior, amount of rego left and condition of the tyres. Post up the link for the add if you want so we can have a quick look. And I advise you to go into the Gen4 section of this forum and read some of the recent advice posted up in regards to buying one of these. They do have some common problems, although beautiful cars to look at and even better to drive. If it didnt have the common problems (which have a fix) I'd pay 15g for the car in a heartbeat.

yep as b4cruiser said, i bet one of the reasons they're selling now is they don't want to fork out for the 100k service which is coming up so ad a couple of grand to your budget for getting that done in the near future

Yeah I have been talking to a few people and they rekon 14 grand would be the good price. I'm hopeless at bargaining though :\ any tips on how I could get the price down?

I'd offer $12k. Work from there

Doesn't have leather interior and there's no safety pack. But it does have low ks and looks in good condition. Others have mentioned that the 100k major service is due soon but if the guy has serviced it properly it shouldve already been done last year (5 years OR 100ks whichever first). If it hasnt already been done then he hasnt looked after the car...
But the ks are on the sweet spot for their dredded Head Gasket failure. I'd start with 12k as mrgnluke has mentioned and offer him no more than 13k IF (and that's a big if) the head gaskets are fine. If they're starting to leak I'd probably offer him 12k and walk away if he doesnt want it.

Good luck mate

Yeah we test drove it today, and it is so good! It is in pretty much new condition and most aspects of the 100k service have been done. We are getting it RACQ checked tomorrow. I don't really know how to check the Head Gasket, so will the RACQ people check that? The car still has 5 months Rego left. We got the price down to around $14 500 but not really sure the price will be dropped any further unless the RACQ people find something wrong.

Thanks

You will need to ask them to take off the undercover bracket (big black sheet of plastic underneath the car that protects the bottom of the engine) and look for any visible signs of oil and coolant leak from the engine block itself. Its usually right down the bottom of the engine and they leak externally so it's pretty easy to spot. Make sure they check for any signs of it, so there's no chance he might've wiped/cleaned it off.
