I had one 3 weeks ago. Didn't get the job, but like you, thought of all the right things to say after the interview.

From what I can remember, they asked :

- why the position appeals to me.
- what skills i could bring to this position.
- why i should be the one they hire.

I honestly couldn't think of the word 'loyal'. I just went blank. I wanted to say 'loyal' because I assume they don't want to hire and train someone who is going to leave in 6 months. You're honest, reliable, enthusiastic, team-oriented as well as independent.

I really can't stand the "tell us a bit about yourself" one. If you get that, remember that they want to hear about your career/ further education [ and hobbies that somehow relate to the job ], and not about how you have a missus and go see bands every weekend.

Good luck, mate (o:

I had an interview 14 years ago when i was 16. big_smile

We had to go through a hand written resume, 3 hour apptitude test, then the interview and finally a physical! All to be an electrician for Holden.

There were about 3000 applicants for 22 apprenticeships.

Its the sort of job thats hard to leave.

Don't do what the guy I interviewed a few weeks ago do. If you're asked where you want to be in 5 years do not say "owning an island in Fiji". Chances are they really don't care that much wink

Hi,

"I was the best worker in my cell block"

"Is that your daughter out front?"

"What is your policy on showering?"

Always worked well for me.

Seriously. Be yourself, be VERY prepared for the question "Why should we hire you".

Do not lie to get a job - not because they will know you are lying, but simply within six months, you will be living a lie - and hating it.

IMHO.

Cheers,
Nik

I been at my current place for 5 years! and im kinda getting over the scenery.. the once nice young girls are now 5 years older... ahahah

I really want this job.. but hopes aren't too high just in case I get relegated..

anyways.. the role if anyone is curious is still in my profession " I.T Systems and Process Analyst / Project Management".

and Franky, as for show me the money... there is plenty here! smile (hence why I want it)

Re: Interview Time

I'm trying to get a BA / Consulting / Project Management role down here in Mexico and its a pain in the arse. Too many kn0b jockey's with IT degrees just in it for the money and they'l change jobs as soon as they get something better. Thats fair enough but I like what I do and I've got the relevant experience but i've realised its not enough cos a ll companies are looking for people who have worked in big companys blah blah. P|sses me off royaly. Interviews suck because they are so damn meaningless. Everyone tells you to just be yourself but really, how many people would get a job if they were themselves? Most people who get a job just recite a load of BS, interviewer likes it, you get the job. Thats like getting on your knees and saying "ah".

End of rant smile

Re: Interview Time

Good luck Brendan!

Mate, I just went through this myself for a job at SEEK - 3 interviews and a Psych test later I got the job. I was so glad to get it after that process!

My best advice is to be yourself and just answer the questions honestly. If you don't know the answer to something, tell them that you don't know but you're intersted to find out.

Have a general conversation with them about something totally aside from the job - this shows confidence and also shows that you are capable of showing interest outside of work.

They will undoubtably ask the general questions, like why did you apply, why are you suited, what are your strengths/weaknesses... These questions are not hard questions, but tend to put people on the spot. Careful research of the company always helps with these questions.

EG - Why did you apply for this job? - Make yourself sound as though they would be nuts not to recruit your skills into their organisation by saying something like -
"At this stage of my career, I'm only willing to work at a handful of companies, like Coke,  Google or Subaru.... I've always closely monitored for positions within the company and as soon as this one became available I jumped at it..." Go onto say why you like the company and what you think you can bring to them and what you think you can get out of them.
You've got to make it sound like your skills are so good that you have opporunities available to you elsewhere.

If they dump strengths and weaknesses on you, (most big places are avoiding this question in favour of Psych tests) don't spend too much time on it. Make it short and sharp. EG, "
my strengths are good communication skills, high level MS Office, great interaction iwth other team mates and all types of business demographics. My weaknesses are trying to take on the work load for myself instead of distributing around" Then throw in something fun as a weakness like chocolate, or spending too much on your car...

Don't smoke at all anytime throughout the day before the interview. (If you smoke that is)
Interviewers like to have a fresh person come through their doors, not someone that smells as though they've had 10 nervous ciggis on the way there!

Make sure you get business cards off them, then after the interview, shoot them a quick email to say thanks e.t.c.

Try to keep the interview light and warm and almost as if you are in control of the interview, not the others. This can be tricky to do without coming across as over confident. So, imagine that you work there already and you are just going for a regular old meeting. They will see that you are comfortable and therefore be more comfortable themselves.
Afterwards, they'll probably remember you for that more than the actual answers that you gave.

Ask questions... Things like; How many employees are working here? What do you like about working here? Who would I be reporting to? How the the company stand up financially at the end of last financial year? Are there plans for expansion interstate/overseas? What is your dress code?

I can't think of anything else right now, but I'll let you know if anything else pops into mind.

Cheers,
Chris
