Instrument cluster change over

  Top of Page

hey Guys & Gals,

I was just curious as to whether an instrument cluster from say a 2002/3 liberty/outback could be installed into my 99 outback.

the outback Odometer only has a 1 line display and from what I know the later models have a 2 line display with trip and odo visible? ( is this correct or am I mistaken)

Cheers

I'm pretty sure that there is no difference in the instrument cluster on all Gen3 Outback's and Liberty's.

next question then.... does the computer control the saved odometer reading or is it in the cluster..... ie. would I need to have the cluster odometer reprogrammed to show the true odo reading?

you will need to reprogram the new cluster to show original kms..as each speedo keeps its own kms...smile

I usually send the new and original to an instrument tech. Cost $50+ depending on car. I assume they reflash the cluster with the new reading.
Some cars store odo readings in the cluster and PCM. Not sure about Subaru.

The Gen III Stores it in the Cluster and they reflash the cluster with the reading of your old odo.... Not sure about the Gen 4 and the new fozas but im assuming they would be the same, subaru isnt as stupid as ford to keep them on the PCM...smile

The cost is different from car to car, but i couldnt tell you how much it is coz i hacent done one in a few years but last car that i did was an Ba Falcon and it was of memory $200...

Not as silly as it sounds. Later Commodores store it on both cluster and PCM.
If you suspect a car has had the cluster flashed with a lower odo reading, you can pull the true reading from the PCM.
