Importing a used Liberty (Legacy)

  Top of Page

Hello folks,
I intend to export my Legacy into Australia for my own use.
As I have some mods done on the car, I suppose it may be deem 'not road worthy' by the authorities.
Is there anyone (the Customs or which emissions authority?) I can check with, before proceeding with the shipping?

Where abouts are you importing the car too?

Depending on which state the car is going to be registered in, I would think it would be best to contact the relevant Transport Authority (RTA,VicRoads, Queensland Transport etc) and explain what car you are bringing in and what mods have been done to it. They can then give you an a answer.

Also it may not be the mods that are the issue but the car may not meet ADR and could possibly need some alterations to comply (eg. windows, seatbelts). Again, the relevant Transport Authority should be able to help.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure here in VIC, that no part of the car may be lower than 100m from the ground and if lowered the shock must retain 2/3rds of its original travel. You can run coilovers in VIC, but not in NSW?

Thanks for your reply.
I will be shipping my car to Melbourne. Suppose the authority should be VicRoads?

Ive imported cars to Vic before.

If you have owned your car for more than 12months with proof of ownership in your name and you are an Australian citizen or soon to be, you can apply to import it as a Personal Import. If its a personal import, you only need to meet the basic criteria for compliancing, which means some modifications can be overlooked.

If you cant import under the Personal Import scheme, then you can only import the car as a temporary driving car in Australia, inwhich it must return to your home country when you leave.

Either option is quite costly, considering shipping, tax (both state and federal), and a basic compliance with an engineer and lots of other small charges here and there.

Go to the DOTARS website for importing info.

Go to VicRoads website for victorian info.

I intend to decat my pipes and EcuTek it. My tuner said that a properly tuned car should not have an issue with the exhaust.

Any experience with Customs or VicRoads, regarding importing a decatted car?

If, in the worst case, the import is rejected, does it mean that I have to send the car back to the country of origin, or can I fix this problem at an OZ workshop?

If you de-cat the exhaust you can always put one in before you do the emmisions test.
