I.T Career advice?

  Top of Page

Hey this is a question for all the guy and gals who work in the computer industry,

I have the opportunity to do a MCSE along with 7 other courses for 4,995 dollars. Normally the 7 course package is $22,000 but there is a discount which brings it to $4950 (including MCSE) which is the normal price for the MCSE on its own. Now i just got a job working as a laptop technician repairing toshiba laptops under warranty, and i really wanna get some more qualifications so I can get those crazy pay checks when i'm older.

MCDST CURRICULUM

MCSE 2003 CURRICULUM

CCNA CURRICULUM

CCNP CURRICULUM

CCSP CURRICULUM

SECURITY+ CURRICULUM

LINUX + CURRICULUM

Im really a hardware/hands on kinda bloke, the programming side just brings back nightmares of my maths classes. ha.  So has anybody done any of these courses? or knows someone that has done the courses?

If you dont like programming - stay away from CCNA type stuff.

MCSE is recognized in all company's as a pretty decent qualification to have depending on what sort of job your going in to.

I'd say go the MCSE if your not interested in programming...

Cheers alex, Ive noticed a fair bit when applying for jobs "If you have MCSE it will be to your advantage, etc". Ive completed a diploma in System Admin last year and it seems like the MCSE covers a lot of the same stuff. Do you think they would allow recognition of prior learning with any of these courses?

Either that or you get away from doing support for 6 months only to discover a distinct lack of staff causes you to be thrown back on support once again :nono:
Oh well, at least I'm paid a hell of a lot for your average support person...

The apple job would have been a good stepping stone.

When you are being shortlisted or interviewed, people look at where you have worked.   OK so you may have to talk to ppl who don't realise the computer must be plugged in to operate and toast doesn't fit in the superdrive, but would be a good stepping stone to something at a more senior level and in windows territory if thats your thing.   Also internal promotion opportunities within Apple to consider.  Not to mention how cool you would be in your friends eyes to get hold of Apple tshirts (iShirt) and keyrings (iKeyRing).

"hey lets give this guy a go, he's worked at Apple for 12 months" for example ...

If you still have the opportunity to attend the interview I recommend it.

Apple certainly is a well recognized company and would look great on a resume, but.. i mean. This laptop technician job pays better and its actually work I enjoy, it might be too soon to actually say that though. And how would working with apple be a good stepping stone for windows territory? Wouldnt working with pcs not apples be a better stepping stone? I did a cert II on apples, that was fun. cough. If you want to launch your career you've got to get some bling on your resume.   12 months of "I worked for Apple" will get you in the door most places as opposed to 12 months working at the local Mr Fixit.  People like to see Enterprise experience with ITIL processes and all the BS.

This will get you a foot in the door at a similar sized outfit that pumps Windows (i.e. Dell, Microsoft, HP etc etc).  Or an opportunity to fix Apple hardware (its all much the same gear).

I ackowledge it might not be what you want to do initially but will give you better prospects in the long run.  If you've got an interview with Apple, you've already done pretty well to get to that stage.

Unless your current or future boss drives a Subaru, you gotta get that bling on the CV.

i'd rather them pay me more so i can put it into my own car, personally

also,

he is talking about doing the MCSE, which is a globally recognized course with Microsoft certification. you actually gain the title of "microsoft certified professional"

i'd rather a globally recognised certificate than a degree from the local uni saying that i can pass 4 subjects a year for 4 years...

at uni they told me that p's get degrees.... and it's tru, all you have to do is get an overall of 51 percent and you get the degree...

well none of those are really what youd called hands on, youd probably be better looking into network engineering or electronics.

ive done cert4 network eng, and now am a subcontract Engineer doing just about everything. mcse is on my list of things.

where is that course special being held?

Im part way through my MSCE at the moment, got a couple of exams to go.
Usually depending on your selections you can become a MCSA on the way.
Just dont think you can step in with no experience, M$ exams can be quit tricky and some of them have a low success/pass rate, generally you should hit the books/vmware/cbt nuggets/transcender a month before each exam to help you alone. Its always good you see congrats you havce passed, your now a MCP come up on the computer screen.
I have also done my CCNA and there is'nt that much programming so to speak. Not like VBA or C+ anyway.
Just need to know switching commands and IPv4 & 6 pretty fluently.
CCNA i got quite a kick out of, was fun and helped alot with my current career.
Either way, I think I.T is the way to go despite what the others say. It is still young and will always continue growing. There will always be careers in I.T, and if you do it right, big $$$ too.
As some others said, dont be scared to hit the books and try other materials too.
My 2c. Worth somewhat lesser than that though :mda:

Cheers for all the help. Ive read everything everyone said and now im looking forward to doing to courses,I found the courses through seek learning, I just gave them my phone number and the next day i was chatting to a really helpful person who organized everything and gave me all the information i asked for. The special price finished yesterday though sorry. I couldn't come up with all the money in one hit so i put a deposit down and that secured the discounted price for me, If one of two of the courses are too far advanced or something, i can just skip them, i really only paid the price for MCSE. I read into all the descriptions and a lot of sounds like i've already covered them when i did my Diploma of System Administration I.T last year. Hopefully should be able to just transfer all my skills learnt from that course to this new stuff.

Cheers

My Brother is a IT contractor in defence ATM and dosen't have any of those qualifications.
He has worked for large institutions (uni's and state govt's) in payroll.
He's on around $1k/day. Not bad for his first contracting gig and has since been offered heaps more.
The key to his success is specialising. Doing all these courses may be good, but you're better off being "really good" at one thing than "just good" at a few.
