I remember when.....

  Top of Page

What are some fond memories you have of growing up, that no longer happen/exist.

I'll start.

I remember when....

Getting up at 8:40 in the morning was a PITA.

I could buy a 600ml coke for $1.80 (Farken $3.00!!!!)

T.V was amusing

I had to ride a bike everywhere.

Summer Holidays were eagerly awaiting all year long, then seem to disappear.. (Now they don't exist....)

80c could buy me a pack of chips.

Going out side and meeting friends. (Now we hardly find time to call each other, and people never seem to be out side full stop.)

There's surly more. But that'll do for now wink.

Ah yes the good old days.

I remember when a deck of smokes was $5.25 and when I could fill up my drop tank in my Torana (which had a capacity of 125 litres) for $71

I also remember the days when you could go for a cruise in a car that had a decent amount of motor hangin out the bonnet and not get harassed by the constabulry.

Yeah well those days are definately goooooonnnnnneeeeee

I remember the days of democracy and of when freedom of speech was a given right and not subject to moderation nazism!  When people had a thick skin.  When being precious was unheard of!

But then, I am guilty of abit of that too!!! :Pogranich

Whipper snappers.
I remember pre decimal 66 & pre metric 74
Small bottle of coke 5c, my parents owned a deli & you could buy a 5c/Sixpence bag of lollies that would keep you going all day,I was 9
Thinking of giving up smoking when a packet of Benson & Hedges got to a dollar..I was 13
Petrol was 12c per litre & a new XB falcon was about 4g I was 17
A brand new Honda was $1,200, I was about 12
A television was about 6mth's wage when I was about 5....we had one of the first.
I've got a pile of old newspapers from when I was about 7 in 1963, trust me........most things are a hell of a lot cheaper now than back then, portable transistor was a weeks wage & a washing machine would have been 10 weeks wage.
But the thing I miss most was playing roodies with my mates sisters:D

I remember when...

- Sunny Boys cost 20c, and they had often had yellow writing inside the wrapper to say you won a freebie.

- Footy cards came with a stick of rock hard chewing gum.

- You Can't Do That On Television.

- MTV with Richard Wilkins on Channel 9.

- Mullets didn't go by the name of mullet.

- Every fish and chip shop near the beach had a tabletop arcade game system, with 2 school chairs.

One thing you forgot to mention was that the average house cost heaps less.
1967 our house in central Brisbane was 6000 pound and dad was on 38 quid a week. Thats roughly 150 weeks full wages, that same house is now $600,000. There is now way I could earn $3800/wk now.
I don't have any fond memories. Alzheimers.

I grew up on the Murray River in the bush smile

We would play outside all day on the river, fishing, swimming, riding bikes. My parents didnt worry about us and it cost nothing to have a good time.

Now it costs $$ to take my kids pretty much anywhere and you cant let them out of your sight because you cant trust anyone.

My fond memories are of a carefree childhood.

Thats lost for my kids now.

The worlds messed up.

I remember when good cartoons like astro boy and when agro's cartoon connection was on. Miss the days of not having to wake up early in the morning for work. I would have done Ranger Stacy 2.

I remember getting up early on a saturday morning to watch Transformers, Robotech and other awesome 80's shows.. and the road we used to live on was so steep that riding you bike down it without using the brakes was hardcore, and skating down it standing up was nuts! (I was like 9!!). That hill doesnt look so steep now lol.

I remember when:

- Rage had decent music
- People had a bit of respect for the police
- People actually wanted to help their community thrive and weren't self-obsessed, lying, cheating, back-stabbing piles of sh*t
- There wasn't an over-zealous focus on speeding and P-plate drivers
- You weren't an alco with a binge-drinking problem if you had 6 beers at a Saturday night BBQ
- Smacking kids was ok if they'd just done something really wrong
- Winfield Triple Challenge. 'Nuff said
- You weren't a bad person for telling someone you thought they had all the charm, intelligence and wit of a rotting carcass, you were just honest.
- Adelaide F1 GP

Good times.

- Transformers and Voltron on TV
- Some sci fi tv series called Captain Power or something and nobody seems to remember it. The humans got into robots and went around shooting aliens/robots if memory serves me correctly.
- $2 of mixed lollies would last forever
- When I bought a packet of whiz fizz and my grandma thought i was doing drugs
- Maccas meals were around $4
- Its a Knockout!
- Rob Brough was the host of Family Feud and Tony Barbour was still doing Sale of the Century
- Reebok Pumps made u jump higher

A couple more. I remember when:

- Woody Harrelson had hair
- When 5c bought you 3 frogs/milk bottles/etc
- Killer Pythons were under $1
- A Blue Meanie was to be feared and respected. You bow to the white 15s
- Old Parliament House wasn't so "Old"
- New cars still had chrome bumpers
- Multi-class racing at Bathurst. Group A and the last of the big-bangers: Group C
- Cameron Diaz appearing in a Coke commercial as a n00b

A few more from the olden days when my parents had a grog shop/deli in Rockingham from the time I was 5 until I was 9.
There were no single mothers there, only ex farmers & refinery workers etc,
Beer only came in wooden crates of 48 king browns,
Stubbies were a thing of the future,
Beer cans had to be opened with a can opener ( I think they actually came out whilst we owned the shop because I remember coke cans coming out & they were 10c/12p )
Our biggest customer was the Catholic Priest & his Nuns (huge deliveries every week)
The old man had two tills, one for the Tax man & one for us,
You were king of the road if you had a 3 speed stirmey archer gear set on your bike,
We went for a holiday to England on a ship via the Suez Canal & when we got there there was a huge shipping strike (1966) and it cost nearly twice as much to fly back than the luxury top deck cabin on the boat that had booked booked,
Cops drove Anglia's and could punch idiots to save doing paperwork.
The only thing even remotely like a computer was the shop till.

Ahh flashbacks:give_hear
