I'm new here, be gentle...

  Top of Page

Hi,

I have been active on alot of forester forums and WRX forums, but have never gotten on to a lib one.

quick intro, I currently own an imported S/tb forester, previous rides were a MY02 GT foz, and 2 MY97 RX impreza's. having some bad runs with foresters, and given I have always had a massive love affair with the MY96 legacy's, thought I'd better get on here.

basically, soonish I will be in the market for a Gen II lib, and hope to get it to full JDM spec (by importing a race/rally rego GTb and swapping the gear over.

anyhoo, I will be on here abit, basically getting a feel for what sort of money a good GenII goes for and what cruises, activities happen around these parts.

I also have alot of spares lying around gathering dust, but they will appear in the for sale section at a later date, more interested in growing my love for these cars!

ha ha, no, that is not mine (unfortunately, don't let anyone hear me say that though! yikes) and the foz is my old GT.smile

EDIT: seriously considering getting rid of the foz and getting a gen 2 liberty GT. need ALOT of questions answered, have been searching, and will continue to, but heres a few I couldn't find.

I have a VF35, V3 STi TMIC on my foz. as well as a straight cut 1st, 2nd and 3rd manual tranny. can any of this be swapped over in to a GT gen 2? OR would it be better to start from scratch and buy a relatively stock GT lib and work it upo from there?

how hard is it to find a manual GT?

and how hard is it to organise a lift in one so I can feel what the difference is between a worked engine with single turbo and a twin? big_smile

Welcome to the site!

The GT is a twin turbo, so the VF35 won't be any good to you without converting to single turbo. Not sure about the TMIC but I'd say it would need an additional part or two to make it suit the twins.
Gearbox would most likely be fine though.

lol thanks mate tongue

As Luke said your VF35 and TMIC won't be any good to you unless you convert it to single turbo (which you should probably do anyway), the gearbox should be fine. Manuals seem to be fairly rare but they are around so just keep looking.

Also Kenan did a full RSB swap from a complete JDM import into an AUDM Liberty so that option isn't out of the question

Where are you from??

thank's for the replies, I think it was too late at night for me! I know the GT's are TT, but failed to mention that I would be looking at a single conversion.just didn't know if this is that common, but after reading a few threads, its a better option! strange.

JDM wise, I guess a swap would be my ultimate goal if possible, all the JDM body trim/badging, interior and engine components would be perfect, eventually.

and sorry, I am from Pitt Town, NSW. I live on a street with a white gen 2 liberty wagon. nice sounding and clean example. not sure if he's on here, haven't stopped to speak to him yet.

and heres some more for you boys! ha ha!big_smile

Don't listen to these two... Seriously, where do you guys get off giving misleading info and heresay?

The V3 TMIC will work fine. It literally bolts up. I had one in my car when it was still twin turbo. Passenger side mount won't line up, but it can be made redundant, as it mounts up on the hoses and the other mount, and it's rock solid. BOV outlet diameter is different, and can be overcome with either a new BOV with the correct corresponding diameter fittings, or modification of your current one.

Convert to single. TT is rubbish.

I speak with what I know. Not what I think.

Ditch VF35. VF34P20 or PE1820 clone is where it's at.

Can squeeze more ponies out of these than a foz motor.

Kenan's RSB conversion wasn't a walk in the park by any means. It will be a long and expensive exercise.

Enjoy the forums, and be careful with info here. Classic example already demonstrated for you.

ha ha, to be fair, it needs a few mods to fit it up, so its not a straight bolt on.big_smile and I know what you mean by the TMIC being rock solid, I have the one mount on mine ATM, and it doesn't move.

my foz motor and gearbox are a bit special. I have a MY04 JDM STi block with some work (pistons, etc. but unknown to what extent) with JDM S/tb forester heads (the most aggressive ever, MY97 heads that have been made to flow much better, and has wildly different cams to an australian delivered forester) with straight cut 1st, 2nd and 3rd manual box (5 speed).

coupled to this when I bought it was a TD05 big 16g turbo, with a massive FMIC. since owning it, given I drive on some pretty ywisty stretches of road, I removed the TD05 for the VF35, and threw the TMIC on, and after this, the car was much more to my liking. not really chasing huge HP levels, just after a nice streetable car that is relatively easy to drive, but still has poke when needed and minimal lag.

so what motor do the gen 2 libs come with? EJ20G? that is what I had in my foz as stock, but a previous owner decided it was a good idea to blow it, so an EJ207 transplant was made.

I also have a spare semi closed deck block in the shed, ready to put STi cams and make it a 2.35L. still tossing up wether this would be a good idea to complete or not?

All good mate smile
As Alex hinted at, the AUDM to JDM conversion isn't as simple as it seems. It's been a while since I looked at it, but if memory serves the rear wiring loom is quite different in the AUDM cars, so you can't just swap the front loom over from the JDM to the AUDM and call it a day, you'd probably need to swap almost everything over. By the time you're finished it probably wouldn't have been much more expensive to just go with a WRX or STi half cut.

Re: I'm new here, be gentle...

ah, yeah, it's pretty similar on a forester too. and to be honest, I don't mind swapping EVERYTHING over, as the interior would be ripped out anyway, and I could improve on the wiring to some extent as well, so would probably be a good option to be honest.

UNLESS it is easy and legal to have a real GTb registered in NSW? not sure how these cars were complied, if they have a plate, then all will be sweet, but rebuild VIN's and the like, I guess it's a swap for sure.

BTW, this is what is happening with my import forester ATM, unable to rego it in NSW.

Less "I think..." posts.
More "I know..." posts.

You may want to check this This thread out.. If you can't get this to "bolt on" you don't deserve to drive a Subaru.

Speciality is in the eyes of the beholder.

I'd stab myself in the ears if I had to put up with straight cuts.

Six speeds is where it's at.

But not going to start this debate here.

04 STi block - is that an Impreza STi? or Foz STi? Where did you source this motor from?

Foz heads are somewhat lacking in terms of flow, I'll agree with that. Best off with some STi heads of some description.

VF35 is a sleeve bearing turbo, like the TD0516G. Not much difference, smaller rear I believe.

If you want best drivability, you're better off with something from the ball bearing side.

VF34 (with standard P18 rear housing) sounds like it's right up your alley.

Click here for a fantastic, no B/S tech source for all Gen2's.

Re: I'm new here, be gentle...

ha ha, yeah, the straight cuts are a bit crazy, but I can put up with them. to be brutally honest, even though the 6 speed is a heavy beast of a thing, it is great. although my preference would be for a DCCD 5 speed. I don't drive like a nutter, and am pretty easy on my cars, so I don't really need something insanely strong.

the foz heads from all australian cars are a bit poo, but JDM foz heads are identical to same era WRX heads, so the heads in mine are essentially V3 WRX heads.

the 04 STi block is I believe (don't quote me on this, only going off what seller has told me) is a JDM STi impreza block, so a 2L semi closed deck block. no idea at all where it came from though, but I have a receipt for all the engine work, including the sourcing of this block, and it came in at around $15,000, inc. labour and all. which shocked me to no end, this seems too much!

from what I can gather, the VF35 is comparable to a VF30, so smaller all round than a TD05 (the actual turbo I had was a GTPS01, a TD05 16g copy) it was laggy, I believe due to a rather average tune with the FMIC.

a VF34 would be nice, have driven a WRX with one of these fitted, and it seems like it would be up my alley.

and thank's heaps to everyone for all the info so far, this is great! will check that link out now.
