They are so cheap because NZ dont have any "Local" cars, they are all imports from japan, most get imported already used.

And they cant be imported into Australia, well thats not true, u can bring them here but they wont be able to be registered, just like importing them from Japan.

Its beacuse the TT B4 was a car that was sold by subaru Australia, It is to  protect the markets and people who run businesses in this country. Tthe Government charge them tarrifs and taxes etc to have a liscence to sell these cars.  So any car that is currently sold under liscence here in Australia can not be privatelly imported and registered in Australia. That includes model variations, such as the Gen 2 GT's as they are basically just a model upgrade of the Liberty. If we could all bing in what we liked then the local market would be non existant and the value of all cars would drop.

Cars that are not stocked and sold here somehow can, im not sure how that works but i know it is done, maybe someone else can tell you.

So they dont let people bring them in and get them registered on the road, there used to be a 15 year rule where cars over 15years old could be brought in, but that was axed last year.

Very true ... but a slight omission.

They can be brought in under the personal import rule, whereby if you work or live in a country for 1 year, and you have a car during that time (it must be registered under your name for the period of time), then it can be brought in via this rule. This applies to ANY car ...

Or why don't you just get an RX conversion? wink Hehe

Does anyone know the amount of time it would be needed to be registered to a resident of NZ before it can be imported?

It needs to be registered in NZ for 12months before it can be imported and can only be done so if the person is moving to a new address in australia with the car.

I dont think you have to be a resident as such, just that you can prove that you have owned the car and lived in the country for at least 12months.

Good idea, fund a car for her for a year and get her to bring it back.

I have a feeling (and I may be wrong) that the '99 B4 RSK in the top add would be able to be imported as Subaru Aus did not import into Aus the TT B4 until 2001, therefore it "technically" is not a vehicle that was ever sold in Australia.

My 2000 Legacy B4 RSK was brought in brand new from NZ after the purchaser "owned" it in NZ for 3 months before shipping it over.

You may just be able to bring this, or any similar car, in.
