I Hit An Emu

  Top of Page

Hi,

Well. Chalk up one more random object I've managed to mangle a car with. This time an Emu was the prey for the mighty Outback. Almost hilarious when you think I hit the Forest in my Forester, now I've hit the Outback in my Outback.

Ha.

Doing around a buck ten, seven and a half hours into a nine hour trip. Then coming over a nice blind crest, Australia's favourite flightless bird was taking a stroll on the black stuff, probably having a wonderful afternoon in the dying sunlight snacking on offerings pinned down by passing cars.

I had different plans for Mr. Emu's afternoon.

Bonnet, front left headlight, front left quarter panel, guard and grille. Pretty badly pushed in, but didn't seem to crease anything further down the car and there was no liquid leaking from the car. I drove to the nearest town of Manjimup and again checked temperatures, and any leaks. Now, those wily Subaru people out there might have picked up on the fact I drive an automatic, have made a reasonably higher speed contact with a bloody big bird... I however am not so wily and had no idea that what I am assuming is the transmission oil cooler is located inside that front guard. The automatic box kept dropping back from 5th -> 2nd, and not finding any power anywhere.

CEL, cruise and something else started flashing all at once and I got off the road immediately.

Then, my luck changed dramatically. Being as we were still over an hour and a half from home, and quite a way from the nearest town - it wasn't looking good. Reception? Ha. NextG FTL? Then the next bloke up the hill pulled over, in fact in the time the car was there about 12 cars pulled over to help. I was driven back to the nearest town, of which the bloke who picked me up knew nothing. We went to the first petrol station, which coupled as a diner, and I asked if she knew a number for the towie, preferably with a tilt. The bloke standing next to me was the towie - just down to get his Friday night fish and chips. Too easy. Then I learned that the bloke who picked me up was actually headed the one and a half hour journey to my home town! Freakin' couldn't believe it.

So after all that - the car is still ****ed - but at least I got home in time for a beer and to watch the Dockers lose.

Sorry for the long post.

Anyone got any idea what kind of engine/trans damage might have been caused in this incident? I want to make sure it gets fixed properly.

Cheers,
Nik

Hi,

Unfortunately the Emu died as a result of the accident. No pictures, as I didn't have my phone, and the car is 2 hours away in the middle of nowhere!

Cheers,
Nik

Hi,

Insurance claim for sure. Can't afford to do anything else. I'm worried about some fairly serious damage from the transmission - guess we'll wait and see!

For now - back to drinking.

I've only hit Roo's and trees in the past, so at least an Emu was knew.

Cheers,
Nik

Fark man, that sucks!!! bit hard to say what would be causing that trouble without seeing the vehicle. Keep us posted on what you find out but for sure.

At best the transmission has overheated.
At worst its drained of any fluid.

Either way its not flash.

At a guess anyway.

Sorry to hear Nik. Truly a misadventure for the outback.

So let me get this right... you hit a tranny cooler and leaked out the fluid?

Insurance should surely cover it...

As dicky as it sounds, but perhaps a bullbar may be a wise future investment?

That's bad luck.  Not so long ago a roo tackled your B4, no?

Those bullbars don't look too bad.  Times have changed since the good old 5-posters.

Fingers crossed your outback gets sorted and no great damage is done to the tranny.

Haha, mate, that's hilarious as this is really the deep, dirty south. Haha.

That bullbar actually does mould to the car quite well... might be a good idea.

Thanks for the kind words!

Damned straight its a good idea! You're lucky too. They've recently reopened business under new owners as it shut up shop for a couple of years.

The other brands of bullbars for the subaru look somewhat nasty. At least these look the goods.

Factory now located in Goulburn, NSW.

Hi,

The insurance company wont even be looking at the quotes that were submitted to them on Monday, until Friday afternoon.

If the gearbox is damaged, according to Subaru Australia, it is NOT a serviceable item, and was described as a 'throw away part'. If the gearbox is damaged insurance WILL NOT cover the damage, as it was driven from the scene of the actual accident.

Can you afford to put a H6 in it?
Or perhaps a late model WRX cut?

Re: I Hit An Emu

Hi Paul,

I have an H6 mate, it's a 3.0R Outback.

I am just praying that it was just a case of losing fluid and overheating, the gears dropping back and having no drive due to no fluid pressure. Top her up, replace the rubber hoses that were damaged.

Nice work Subaru, put rubber hoses behind a plastic headlight and guard at the very forward most part of the car. Stupidest idea I've seen in a LONG time.

Cheers,
Nik

Better than putting rubber hoses behind glass, or a box of nails... Or spare razor blades...

Hi,

Well the headlight is glass, and is held on by screws, and I'm pretty close to getting the razor blades out...

I just hope there is no mechanical damage. As I only just bought the car, I am definitely low on funds. This is why people hate insurance companies.

Nik

Re: I Hit An Emu

Hi,

Hi,

Well. If only it were a joke.

Last night I was working for a few extra hours. In desperate need of dinner I jumped in the car and headed up my driveway towards my house (work and house are on the property). Halfway up the hill a kangaroo came in from the right hand side and struck dead centre of the bonnet. I was in the Ford Courier ute, so I was only doing about 35 clicks. It was a very wet night last night, so couldn't really tell if the radiator was cracked or anything.

Bonnet, grille, front bumper at the very least.

All this on my birthday.

I'm seriously thinking I just need a crappy 4WD with the worlds biggest Roo bar.

Cheers,
