How do I create an avatar?

  Top of Page

Hey all,
seeing as though I'm a bit of a dud when it comes to 'puters I would like to know how to create an avatar. I have a few photos that I can choose from but have no idea how to shrink them small enough to fit the size requirements?
Any advice and help?
Cheers,
Matty

Do you have any graphics software at all Matty?  If so, what?

All I have on here is Irfanview and the Kodak photo editing software that came with my camera. I don't have photoshop or anything like that.

OK, I am familiar with Irfanview.  Now, your photo.  What format is it - like .jpg, .gif, etc and about how many kilobytes is it?

They're all jpg's and average around 8-900kb.
BTW, thanks for responding so quickly.

No worries.  OK, I'm assuming you know how to crop the image - if you don't, then let me know.  You'll need to make the image roughly square as the largest image you can use here as an avatar is 80 pixels x 80 pixels, which is a bit on the small side.
Crop it square then open Irfanview and use the File - Open menu to open the photo.  That should make it visible, but it will be fairly large.
Now, go to Image - Resize/Resample and click on it.
Select set new size and click on the preserve aspect ratio (or your car may end up distorted).  If your photo is perfectly square (not rectangular) type in 80 x 80  with the units set in pixels.
Make sure Resample is selected on the right hand side and click OK.
This should reduce your jpg to 80*80 pixels.
Go to the user control panel and select  Edit Avatar.
Now, use the browse button to find your reduced jpg then click save changes.
That should work.
I'll be here for a while yet, so let me know if it doesn't.

Hey Sky Pilot,
sorry I disappeared last night before I had a chance to attempt this, getting up hours before sparrows fart to go to work means early nights. :lazy2:

Anyway, I understand basically how to crop but my default image viewer is Irfanview and when I try to resize, all it does is make the pixels really large and unviewable(?). Should I use the crop command in another application? If so, which one?

Cheers,
Matty
