How cheap is sat nav these days?!

  Top of Page

Is it worth just buying the cheapest one?

Been waiting for prices to come down..  just wondering is it worth it buying the sub-$300 ones and are there any brands to go for or avoid?

All I'd want is to be able to charge it via mini-usb (preferably) or ciggalighter..

Bluetooth phone connection sounds good, but is it really?  Likewise, mp3 playback..  already have iPod in car..

All I want is navigation that's easy to use, functional and has no hidden/ongoing costs..

Any experience you have with recent models would be helpful..  especially if you know of any negatives to note..

Cheers!

Some good reviews if anyone's interested..

Liking the Editor's Choice - Mio Digiwalker C520 but it's a similar price to the Garmins and the TomTom XL...

Any thoughts?

I've thought about getting one, There are lots of Backroads and nice Hill runs to be discovered up here. They are very pricy tho, and arent high on my todo list. Nobody makes a DIN Unit with a flip out screen do they? that would be cool.

i got a navman f20 back in may. it's just a basic thing, so no mp3, bluetooth or camera.

bluetooth is handy in a way. say you're on your way home from work and want to order a pizza, you direct it to "home", then do a restaurant search. find the pizza shop you want, and it'll dial the shop for you. you can then order your pizza, hands-free.

I got dad the Tomtom One back in August from JB-Hifi. Picked it up for $505.

Its a great little unit, easy to use. Blue tooth, Mp3, SD card with all the maps. And can be charged with a cig lighter aswell as the mini USB.

I would recommend it.

I'll have to check my sources, but at last count, I think they've been moving so well, that my source may have run out of stock.

I have both a tomtom 910 ($1200 last christmas, top of the range until recently, newer ones are more compact), and the garmin nuvi 310 (fraction of the price, RRP is still less than a 910).

Truth be told, they all route convoluted (or what you think is convoluted) routes. They all will route for some weird and wonderful route which it thinks it would be faster, but you know your way is faster, and it only takes into account of physical geographical attributes. The fact that it has bumper to bumper traffic, is another story. What I find works well, is you take a sidestreet, and in an instant, the gps re-routes for you. Great for avoiding the traffic jams on main roads, and looking for neat side streets!

The 310 re-routes faster than what my 910 does. Don't be too quick to believe the reviews. You gotta remember, that these reviews are done with either earlier versions or with betas. Most of the bugs or glitches are ironed out with software updates, mostly free to download off of the internet.

Feature for feature, the tomtom 910 has slightly more. I think, the only difference is that the tomtom can broadcast its audio via bluetooth, to a bluetooth ready stereo, so that you can hear the directions via your car stereo.  Otherwise, the nuvi 310 can still act as your handsfree.

The best advice I have when purchasing these, is to roadtest as many of these as you can. Kind of hard when I was first purchasing my tomtom, but I made my decision via the choice magazine reviews.

My final verdict is that I'm much happier with the nuvi 310 - It has audible (voice) alerts for speed, redlight and speed/redlight cameras (yes, in Canberra, they have speed cameras built into the redlight ones!), and school zone audio warnings (the tomtom doesn't have school zone warnings). The nuvi was more compact, has provision for an SD card (the tomtom 910 has 20g built in), and the nuvi was worlds ahead with its word recognition and voice pronunciation software. Makes a huge difference on Australian roads, especially when there's so many Aboriginal derived names, it was always a laugh when the tomtom 910 tried to pronounce these names... The Garmin nuvi pronounces it all so well, its alarming! Perhaps pre recorded??

Stavros, you're welcome to road test both.

Thanks y'all..

I guess the bluetooth phone action is sweet and not all that much more expensive..  Probably still tending towards that cnet editor's choice one.. POI's would have to include gas stations wouldn't they?

Interstingly, www.ryda.com.au has sweet prices..  fyi

Re: How cheap is sat nav these days?!

I bought one of EBAY for just over $300. It's been performing way better than I ever thought it would. I was originally looking at spending $600 plus for brand name systems with less features.

Here's an ebay link for the same item from the same seller HERE

It's touchscreen with Video and Music player, Bluetooth, Trip computer and more points of interest than I can even imagine. It even displays the names of restuarants and shops with their phone numbers on screen as you're driving along!
Oh yeah it also talks to you and has a really neat software interface.

It's very quick at loading destinations and is very accurate. It's literally stopped me out of the front of the exact address I need to go to on each occasion.

It's just a generic name, but it uses Navteq and Navmate software - they are one of the leaders overseas for navigation and earlier this year made a break into the australian market and are really giving the sensis system a huge run for their money.

I did take a gamble on buying this unknown model, but I am very happy with the outcome.

I'm in the process of integrating it into the two spare DIN spots below my head unit and hooking up the audio out jack to a cheap two channel amp and some cheapo speakers hidden under the dashboard, which will make the bluetooth functionality for handsfree mobile perfect.... As well as that, I will be able to hear it even when my stereo is turned up.

Here's the progress so far of the system mounted in the dash. Let me know your thoughts good or bad!

That doesn't look to bad at all.

One thing I'd like to know is if you can upgrade the maps yourself, you know, download them wink
