Hi i'm Sam, and I need help to get more punch out of my ej22 N/A engine

  Top of Page

Hi everyone thought I would do the neighbourly thing and introduce myself. I am Sam, I drive a late 1994 lx 2.2lt 5spd man. I have been having trouble trying to get a mild performance cam to give it a bit more balls. It is FWD. Need I say more.....I know alot of users will suggest getting a conversion to AWD and turbo ej20. Unless you can afford to pay for mine it just won't happen.

I have spoken to CROW CAMS. They only make one for an EJ20 TURBO and N/A.
I have been told to contact a place up in QUEENSLAND who dicked me around trying to find BOB for so long I don't call them anymore. I have been told to contact WADE CAMS in Oakleigh, Melbourne. I have already checked out their site and they list only EJ20 cams. They do have an exstensive range and I hope to drop past tommorow, If anyone has any information for me that would be usefull I would so greatly appreciate it that I would almost cry (just because I can't afford a conversion yet.....) Thank you for your time and good night.:victory:  I will post some pics of my ride soon.

Hi Sam, you've obviously done plenty of research already. Best of luck to you, I've looked around and only found one or two places that make cams for the 2.5L, which were located in the states. Unfortunately I haven't seen anything for the EJ22 at all.

I have to ask though, if your reason for not converting is lack of funds, why are you wanting to go spending money on cams? By the time you buy the cams and have them installed you've got almost a quater of the cost of a cheap conversion... Just something to consider!

I can install the required gear myself if it isn't to troubling. I have a few mechanic mates who are willing to help gain any performance out of my car. So the only cost would be cam and associated materials. I was hoping your reply would be like a message from the Subaru god's. If anyone knows a place in melbourne that would do an awd and a turbo conversion cheap then hit me up. Cheers.
I noticed you have the whiteline sway bars fitted to your ride. I was thinking about getting a whiteline sway bar set. But was unsure about how much that would improve a factory ride height car with 17's fitted?

Sorry mate, but unfortunately NA Subarus are not done often so there's very little call for performance cams, particularly for the EJ22.
Sorry, I don't know any mechanics at all in Melbourne so I can't help there.
The swaybars made a huge difference to the handling, and my cars stock ride height also. Couldn't recommend them enough.

Welcome Sam. In the end would the money spent on cams be worth the gains?

Check out the NA sticky here......

may help you with some decisions.

I would be interested though to see what is the gain with cams in a ej22 though.

there is a very good reason practically everyone advises against spending time & money on an NA ej22.. (because it's a waste)

as such, i dare say that's the reason no-one makes performance cams for those engines..

remove the resonator, it will provide much better drivability on ur ej22, and it'll cost u all of $2.50 and a lazy 2hrs.

i personally think doing or spending anymore, apart from maybe a full exhaust if ur desperate, is pointless.

spend the money on suspension, make ur car handle like a go-kart, and ull be guarenteed more big_smile for ur $$..

just like tak in initial d lol

good option would be similar to what soup is doing and pick up a DOHC ej25 from a gen2 rx. good motor that makes stacks more power and torque than the ej22.

Alexxx, I noticed you have a time of 15.603 or so at the bottom of your post. I assume that is what your rx ran in a qtr mile? And although a wagon that is just over 1.1 sec from what my car runs in almost stock form. Would the 2.5lt conveversion be viable on a small budget?

yes it is mate with some more in it hoping to head up to wsid in march when it cools down a bit!

how long is a piece of strings? really depends on the motor's original purchase price. soup picked up a busted one for $50.

100 shot of NOS, and two big bottles.

The outlay vs the end result there's nothing that comes close.
