hi and help

  Top of Page

Hi all, here I am being what every kid hates an interfeering Dad.
My son bought himself a Impreza, what model well thats where we need help.
He was told it was a WRX STI but looking on web it just shows 2.0l turbo, can anyone assist?
GC8HK8D
ENGINE EF205NW2KE
Type E1
It has an STI under the bonnet, but apart from that I am lost
Cheers

Haha welcome to the site. Here is some info that might help you...

The model code is a seven digit code used to identify each model in the range.
This code is found on the VIN plate in the engine bay.
The following list breaks down the code reading from left to right.

Series code: G=Impreza S=Forester B=Legacy
Body type: F=Wagon C=Sedan
Engine type: 8=2.0L Turbo
Year code: A=MY93 B=MY94 C=MY95/96 D=MY97 E=MY98 F=MY99 G=MY00
Number of doors: 2=2 door coupe 4=4 door saloon 5=5 door sports wagon
Model type: 8= WRX 7= Type RA E = STi D =STi Type R & RA
Transmission: D=5 Speed Manual AWD P=4 Speed Automatic AWD

Broken down, the model code of an MY 95 WRX STi Type RA would be GC8C47D.

Subaru WRX STI GC chassis (1992 - 2001)

GC

Production    1992-2001
Body style(s)    2-door coupé
4-door sedan
5-door station wagon
Engine(s)    2.0 L H4
Wheelbase    99.2 in (2520 mm)

There were six noted versions of the STi. The different versions were marketed with consecutive numbers. Another way to tell the version of a WRX STi was to look at the chassis code. Sedan STi Model Codes were GC8, Coupes were GM8 and Station Wagons were GF8, followed by a letter from A to G. There was a GC chassis version of the RS released in 2001 as well in the United States.
One common misconception is that every Impreza between 92-01 were "GC8's". The code breakdown is as follows; G - stands for Impreza C - sedan M - coupe F - station wagon The 8 stands for the 2.0 L turbo motor. So really, there are many combinations. A coupe STi would be GM8, sedan GC8, wagon GF8. Also, the code for the coupe American 2.5RS's were GM6 (6 standing for the 2.5 L N/A motor)
A JDM Sti Coupe has the code GC8. For example a version 4 Sti coupe has the code GC82DD. With the 2 representing 2 doors.

From all the info i can find it is a WRX, however it may or may not have been produced by STI (some please let fill us in).

I can't find enough information on the "H"

A subaru impreza turbo is an WRX.

STI stands for Subaru Technica International. I guess you could call it subaru’s high performance tuning and parts unit. Basically they produce/tune limited runs of all subaru models which have higher power, better handling modifications etc etc

What do you mean by “It definitely has and STI under the bonnet”??

Is the intake manifold red??

There is every possibility that it is an STI but again I’m not entirely sure. The GC8 sti’s had a red intake manifold and by the sounds of things it has an STI intercooler...

If in doubt the best thing to do would be take it to Subaru and ask them. They should be able to tell you all you need to know about the car

from everything I read, and checking all the random forums.. Im pretty sure it's just a WRX dude..

your best place to go would be rexnet.com.au or .com... I forget..

they know their rexi's like the blue vein.. you know where..

Sold the Subaru, replaced it with a Honda.. but all I know is Subaru's! (and Holden V8's of course):secret:

Re: hi and help

  Top of Page

there are numerous things you can check but then again they can all be changed. EG:intercooler (i think GC8's didnt have the sti in big letters but a small sticker in the middle at the back), inlet manifold (red can of paint will do) alloy lower control arms, seats (sti enbroided), dash has sti written on the tacho i think), alloy bonnet, rear wing, all australian GC8's wrx sti's are numbered 1 through 400...1st batch came in 2 door and 4 door white and blue , second batch 1 through 400 only 4 door steel grey, blue and white....i might not be 100% correct
