Hi All, New B4 Owner

  Top of Page

Hi All,

I've finally been able to joined the 'Suby cult' and purchased a 03 B4 and love it so far!  Just thought i'd drop in to say hi and a a quick question.

I love the B4 performance but the 'dead spot' is abit annoying.  Is there/what is a cost effective option to increase power that could override this little issue?

Thanks all,

Khanh.

ECU Flash or Chip is the only way to truly minimise it
Do a search there is plenty of topics on it on this site

Hey,

Yeah, hope the attachment works.

Cost effective?  Is it possible for a few hundred, rather than over $1k. :mda:

Dosh was spent on buying the car/insurance!

Hi and welcome...:bye:

I'm in the same boat, and the only way that seems the way to go is what has already been mention, ecu refash or new ecu..

Not sure a few hundred will cut it...:Dntknw:

if you want to go cheap, wind more boost through the smaller turbo and hopefully it joins with the second turbo. But if you bought a B4 make the car last awhile and a chip tune of 1-2k would be the way to go. The autos in the B4 seem to pass this flat point by dropping gears and increasing revs, can be a bit annoying in the manuals but I dont think it is that bad compared to the 180sx I got, I am flat to like 3,000revs and then I take off.

Cheers all,

Glad to be part of the Suby 'family',  Drooled for too long over me bro's MY99 Rex!  Although, i do miss the manual at times!

As for the ECU chip, are any other mods required or is it a simple swap/tune?

There i go, showing off again!!! Sorry im in a funny mood, maybe its the burbon that im drinking!!! mmmmmhhh love fridays!@!!!!!!

Re: Hi All, New B4 Owner

Cheers Billsy,

Personally i really would prefer to restrict mods and keep it as stock as possible.  However, if i could tune out the VOD with a chip remap, that would be no probs.

I was also considering a K&N pod air filter.  My brother seemed to experienced some air flow probs with it in his MY99 WRX for some reason so he didn't recommend it.  Would i experience any such probs in the B4?

Thanks for your suggestions!

Welcome to the forums!  And NICE car!
Might be best to save your money for the regular servicing your new car will need!! :scare2:
The deadspot is a twinturbo thing and is best dealt with by all-of-the-above especially 'stroking' - altogether not cheap!
BTW I think pod air filters (and show off valves) only really help you gain attention from the man.. plus I heard you lose fuel economy.. :beee:  you can get better filters for the existing intake box and if you want to retain a stock appearance.. :mda: most people want a little louder exhaust is all..
But back to the VOD - I do agree with the notion that an interceptor can be moved from car to car so makes better sen$e..  try eBay..  That is unless someones doing remaps for free!!

Thanks mate.   smile

Agree the VOD isn't THAT bad, but can get frustrating at times off the line. :mda:  I'm awaiting a return call from an APS distributor to get a quote etc in the chip, so hopefully will be today so i can get some input from you all whether the quote is reasonable.

Thanks for the heads-ups on the pod, and i agree with the 'show off valves'! :mda:  Personally, they annoy the sh*t outa me, especially when its an Excel or the like with them, and full exhaust and wings that can fly! :mda:

Re: Hi All, New B4 Owner

excel - hahahaha
there's plenty in the forums about what u can do..
It comes down to lot's of shiny stainless steel under the hood or not!   as mentioned, I like the thought of a standard engine bay (a la sleeper) but thats just me..
I do however admit to being VERY tempted by this list from AVO: <http://avoturbo.com/avo/html/subaru/retail_price_list_subaru.htm> as hoses are a nice tweak (they make sense)  - sad thing is I'm actually most tempted by the TMIC.. :alcoholic

HMmmmm.... That VOD off the line that your experiencing is not the actual VOD that you get at 4-5K rpm, off the line that drop in power is known as TURBO LAG!! Welcome to the club and no matter how much you drive there is no getting used to it, it just kills you a little more inside everytime..

(Well there is one way to avoid it... Drop the clutch at about 6000rpm..)smile

Re: Hi All, New B4 Owner

sorry, i didn't exactly mean the turbo lag off the line.  The subsequent autoshifts seems to hit the VOD smack bang.  Probably why i always prefer the sports-shift or maybe its just my old manual ways!  Or perhaps i'm just a new B4 owner who's now experienced the TT surge and expect more and more each drive! :blush2:

I intend to retain my auto trans for a long time to come thanks! :mda:
