Wicked price man! I got mine a year ago for 14 and it had 140xxxkms on it.. = sorta wish i waited.
Did it have the 100xxx service done when u bought it ?
People say to aim for 5000km service, but i would say a 10k service will cost similar to 250-400bucks.
100k service is a nice $2000 at least from subaru.

A1 Exhaust (Castle Hill Exhaust Centre), Dave Keys runs the place, nice guy and im happy with his work.
He wacked on a 2.25inch cat back with 12inch hot dog resonator and 3inch inlet 4 inch outlet canon for $390. (290 without the canon) in about 2 hours lol. If you're looking to put on headers (unequal), you're probably going to add another 3-500 for the headers and installation about 100-200 unless you do it yourself.

Cheers,

Dane

No need to spend over a grand on an exhaust for an NA.

Go for this setup to gain maximum "performance" out of it:

Borla replica headers from ebay: approx $250-$300
These will bolt directly onto your car in place of your original headers. If you've got some car ramps, you can do this yourself with relative ease.

Keep your factory catalytic converter and center pipe. These aren't particularly restrictive and anything bigger will just create extra noise and will not increase performance at all.

2.25" diff back rear muffler. You can get a mild steel one fabricated for around $250.
Go for a oval straight through offset glass packed muffler with a 4" tip.
The exhaust place will be able to build this to match the existing lines of the rear muffler and also use the existing mounting points.

That setup will sound very nice without being too loud and the rear tip will look the goods too.

The best thing about doing it this way is that you can add the bits to the system as your budget allows and also enables you to return the car to stock if you ever need to in the future.
I'd start with the headers and go from there. Adding the headers may deliver the sound and response increase that you are looking for without having to change anything else.
It's worthwhile to note that the most restrictive parts of the OEM system are the headers and the rear muffler.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Chris

how do u know which ones are replicas and which ones arent? I checked it out, and most of them are going for 380 or so $US.

1.  Change the rear muffler to a 'sports' oval and you're done..
2.  If you haven't got the 100k service stamp, you're up for around $800..
3. 95 as that's what it's tuned for, and as such will never perform better so don't waste your money..

Borla headers will be advertised as Bolra, the replicas are usually sold as "Impreza, Legacy, Liberty Headers, 304 Stainless Steel" or something along those lines.
The Borla headers are also very expensive compared to the replicas. $380 Us is too expensive.

Just where did you get your information from?

1. Changing the rear muffler only will hardly increase the already marginal perfomance gains that are available on an NA. The most gains will be seen by adding the headers plus a muffler plus a revised air intake. If you were to take one over the other, you'd be best getting just the headers.

2. Major service for a gen3 RX, try $1200

3. They were not tuned for 95 RON. They run horribly on 95 and will provide a decrease in power and economy. They were tuned for 91 RON but run perfectly well, if not better on 98 RON.

any fuel you put in it will be fine, as said above it was tuned for 91.

i still find it runs a bit better on 98 and i get a lil better economy out of it. for the few bucks it costs me each fill i usually use 98.

being an NA engine, you will get sweet FA power wise from a full exhaust system, but you can make it sound tough as and gain a few killer wasps.

ebay headers, (makes it rumble like a wrx, or close enough to)

diff back or cat back exhaust 2.25". dont get anything bigger no matter what they say, if anything you will loose power not gain from going bigger than this.

if you go catback make sure you keep atleast one resonator in there, (or be dodgy and get a copper section in the pipe somewhere:lol:) this helps it to bark a lil more and stops it gettin a raspy/rice sound.

ebay headers i have seen go for as low as 250 and as much as 350 (any higher than this and they just dont sell even tho they are advertised) so keep an eye out for a pair, and PM the bloke to make sure they fit before you buy. a guy sells them on this website for $350, there is a thread somewhere...

yeah, 100k service has been done! so im just gonna get the 10 000km service done soon after i pick it up tomorrow.
exhaust information is quality, thanks heaps again to all of you.
fuel wise, its looking like 98 might be the way to go, if im povo one week, il prolly sit on 95..but the extra few dollars a week will help in the long run i reckon..
to dean, price was pretty good, very happy with the sales guy too, he knew he couldnt rubbish me, iv been researching and looking for a liberty for over a year, during the hsc, study periods were  spent looking up libertys, so he couldnt really do much to decieve.
test drove it last week with a friend who inspected it mechanically, it passed his inspection.
with the exhaust, i just want that wrx grunt without it being too loud etc.
any more advice would be apprecited

one of the 1st things i did to my 98 RX was put on unequal length headers, cat back 2.25" system (any larger and u wont get enough back pressure) with a 6" non proliferated hotdog and Redback muffler. Also replaced the standard panel filter with an apexi one. all that cost me around 550-600 i believe and was well worth it for sound and throttle response. prolly gave a lil more torque too

iv been told its not worth getting unequal headers/extractors, because the piping acts in that way..but most argue the opposite.
im willing to pay for the hi flow cat, catback exhaust and resonator, & willing to get them unequal headers if its worth it..
