Hello and HELP!

  Top of Page

Hey all, recently purchased a 2000 RX Liberty, was so so stoked with it until....
5 weeks later the big end bearing began to play up.
Quickly took it into subaru service centre, quoting $5000 + to fix the issue
It wasnt a major issue, it was only in the beginning stages. Apparently they told me, if i was lucky, it may never need fixing.

So i nursed it along, rarely letting it over 3 grand.
Its 3months later and the sound is getting marginally worse.
Was hoping to get a bit of advice as to whether i should go ahead with the repair, or whether i should go out and find a Reconditioned engine, and replace the whole lot.

Iv done a bit of research, turns out it didnt have an ideal life beofre i bought it...(the heads were replaced just prior to buying it)...so trying to weigh up whether i should stay with the devil i know, or whether i should ditch the old engine and get a reco engine...GURUS I NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE!!!!

thanks

going off what subaru has quoted you it would be better off getting a new engine or rebuild buy a work shop other then subaru.
If your after a bit of go, think about a WRX motor

Sounds like you've had a similar experience to Dylanf. He bought his 98 RX and shortly after discovered the head gasket was gone. Replaced the heads, and 6 months later he threw a big end bearing.

Not too sure why anyone would say you shouldn't fix a playing up big end bearing... What's the point in owning a boxer if you can't rev the crap out of it :Dntknw:

In terms of options, you should look at doing a B4 conversion on it if you've got the cash, if not then you've still got a few options. If you're mechanically minded you could find a decent condition donor engine and do the swap yourself, saving a few dollars, or you could pay a mechanic to do it for you. Or if you've got more money than sense, you could just have the existing engine reconditioned, which you'd be looking at around $4500-$5000, which is just a bit short of what a conversion would probably cost you anyway...

Hey guys thanks for the feedback.

AFter talking another suby mate he suggested taking my car over to Tony at URD. (just quietly... the blokes a bloody champion!) He quoted me a $3500 for a worst case scenario, (crank shaft bent). After thinking for sooo long that i was up for a $5000+ repair Im pretty keen to go ahead with fixing the original engine.

Ill keep yous updated on what happens

Apart from the lack of gen 2 audm turbos.. that bearing has to be the reason why there's so many conversions!

Good luck mate..

Dude,
not cool.  You'll be burning 3K5.  Don't bother.  Drop a reco engine in (2K5 fitted max) or do what BlakB4 said and send the thing to al and get a WRX driveline installed for ~6K.

I'll sell you my Gen3 EJ25NA for 800 shipped if you're that desperate.

If you're spending 2k+ you're better off going with a conversion as you'll get a massive power kick with the repair.

If you've got your heart set on a reco go for it.

2K5 is what I've heard from some guys here in Adelaide at some mechanics.

I'd personally buy a TT front cut and sell of all the bits you don't need and fit that instead.  There's a wrecker in Perth that has Gen3TT auto front cuts for 2K8.  Bolt that up to your current box, sell off the bits you don't need and you'll get power to boot for under 3K5 easy.
