Hello again, need help choosing 2nd/3rd gen Lib

  Top of Page

Hey there, it has been a while since I have said hello, but this time I should be closer to getting finance for a new car.
Was first looking around, noticed a few nice commonwhores and BA falcons, but was informed of bad build quality and never ending problems (especially with the commys).  Plus engine size = more petrol, more rego and more insurance.
Then while looking through cars again I noticed the humble gen 2 and gen 3 libs which I was eyeing off about a year ago.

Found a nice 2gen MY98 RX (auto though sad) with kinda low km's for the age and car, however I was reading up on some topics last night for the genII and re-remembered the head gasket problem with these engines....  now the last thing I want is to fork out another $1-2k to get the engine fixed.

Would idealy like to find a gen2/3 RX Manual for under $10k  (which I have found one gen3 on carsales so far).
What are some things to look out for on the gen 2 and 3 models?  Will be getting our subaru mechanic to have a look over the car before purchased as well.

Thanks in advance and hope to see you QLD guys on the next cruise big_smile

already strapped for cash and don't really want to extend the loan any more than i have to.
contacted a guy in brissy who will look around for me and see what he can find.  he got work mates daughter a new i30 for $1500 less than any dealer could do on the coast, so hopefully he finds a nice 3rd gen manual rx for ~$9k

had a look at the 2nd gen silver rx today, first thing i noticed when i turned on the car was the AC blasting into my face (and it was the best feeling today being ~32 degrees).  didnt take it for a drive but couldn't hear anything loose/belts/ticking noises.  the dealer very stupidly printed out his copy of the car profile, including what he paid for it, expenses, etc.   i asked him if it had been in any accidents, he pointed out it hadnt and the right inside fender paint was a perfect match with the factory under the bonnet (didn't check the left though).  and noticed on the sheet he printed me saying: 16/12/209 ron signorini  [job number] paint front bar and l/f gard (lol spelling)  $650.00    so not sure if the front bar and guard were replaced  or not.. also noticed couple dints in left side.  asked him about any head gasket problems but he didn't know as they somehow lost the log books when a red imprezza was taken away.  so thinking might give it a skip for the time being and see what this new guy can come up with.

also saw a 3rd gen '99 white manual rx wagon, asking $10350 drive away, was alright, however had 202,000km on it sad
hmmmm....i will find a nice lib some day tongue

had a look at a really clean gen 3 rx auto today, had a drive, really comfortable ride even with 18" rims.  although i can tell what they mean by a slush box, put foot down... waiting... waiting... little bit of power.. ok its done now.
bit more expensive than the others as it has 131,000km... going to wait a bit before making decision
it's so hard looking for a car.

What year model was it? And how much is "more expensive than the others" ?
Kms seem pretty low (will depend on yr model though).

was an 01 (new style front though) ended up being just under $13k with onroads.
it looked almost new, and the rims looked pretty good

That actually looks like a pretty good deal. It has the facelifted front end which is a plus in anyones books and low kms too. Wheels arent for me but if you like them then good for you!

yeh its an awesome deal, but i think i shall give it a pass and wait out a little more, i have a dealer and a broker in brisbane both looking out for cars for me.

also, something that made me lol pretty hard (inside) i was talking to a dealer about a heritage, he was saying how it's much better than the rx and its top of the line, the best you can get, and it would cost $5-10k more brand new cause of the options.
i said, well actually the Rx and heritage are the same, the heritage just has leather seats and side air bags, but the rx has a wing.  plus the B4 is the top of the line with twin turbo and leather.
he goes, oh yeh... this is actually the B3 model (LOL!)  did a quick google wiki, turns out the 'B3' is what the 3rd gen prezza's are called in Israel.  this guy had no clue what he was on about.

Lol they will say anything to try and make a sale.
There are a few differences between the Heritage and the RX but clearly the RX is the one more sort after - with the wing etc. Hertiage's also only came in auto. Same engines though.

Keep your eye out mate. The perfect car for you will eventually turn up. The waiting game is the worst but getting something you really want is better than just putting up with something you dont.
