Hej

  Top of Page

Hey all,

I purchased my first car last Sunday (16/03/08), as in yesterday; it's a Subaru Liberty Gen2 GX AWD Sedan 1997. It has it’s faults but what can you expect for $6500??

A couple of questions though:

I’m unsure about it's service history as it isn't logged in the book and the dealer spoke as much English as I do after a couple dozen beers. So my question is should I get it checked out by an NRMA guy and buy the one year warranty that's being offered (for $295) or not. I'm figuring that if I do this then I will have to get it serviced in Parramatta (which is a bit of a trek) and won't be able to service it myself (which would be cheaper).

second question, the car is about to hit 200k km, bout time for a big service I recon... should I get this done at a Subaru place? Or can anyone recommend somewhere that I can get a decent service at a fairly low price and not a massive trek from my place? (I live in Lindfield)

Also, if anyone can help with a wobbly shifter or sourcing me some cheapish rims, I’d be appreciative. The black, rusty steelys don't cut it (though they could last with a coat of black gloss I guess)

Oh, I guess I should introduce myself too, I'm Tristan, I’m 19, love subis, love the boxer rumble and just cars in general. I’m so happy to finally have my own car, and I’m absolutely delirious that it's a subi... couldn't have asked for more...

Cheers guys, T

firstly, welcome to the forum.

Second congrats on the purchase.

Third up, check what conditions are on the $295 warranty, servicing it yourself might not be an issue. Most NRMA checks aren't worth the paper they are so it's up to you on that call.

200k service is big, find a reputable mechanic near you that does subi servicing and you should be right.

Keep your eyes out on the for sale section for anything you might need and best tip of all use the 'search' link at the top of the page and check things out before asking the same question that has been asked a thousand times over, trust me it will save you grief and educate you a lot at the same time. Your first search could be on subaru mechanics in Sydney for example.

Cheers.

cheers for the tip.

there is a genuine subi place up the road from where i live, would it be worthwhile going there or should i find a mechanic to do the work?

also, how do i make the posts in forums appear in non-reverse order, they were like that before i sign in, but switch when i sign in.

cheers,
T

Welcome to OzLiberty Tristan. big_smile

Most second hand warranties arent worth squat. But check what it covers.

A subaru specialist would be able to go over it wel and see if theres any problems.

Re: Hej

sorry about the bad colour, i copy and pasted it into word so i could do a spell check (didn't want to come across as an idiot on my first post, and i know i didn't spell some things correctly.) and i had to change the font colour from white cos i couldn't read it. :russian_r

can someone tell me how to reverse the order of posts in forums please? it's pissing me off that i have to navigate to the last page of a topic just to view the first post.

btw, cheers for the warm wecome guys

This may help.....

Go to "user cp". (up top under OzLiberty header)

Then select "edit options" (left hand side)

Under thread display options "Thread Display Mode" make sure you have "Linear - Oldest First" selected.

may fix it, may not, dunno.

Re: Hej

Welcome mate,

Not sure where Lindfield is exactly but my brother lives in West Ryde so I could ask him where he gets his WRX serviced.

97 GX for $6500? Market value is $11,500 for average condition. I'd be dubious to say the least, definately get it to a Subaru Dealership or Accredited Workshop for a once over and a service. Then once that's done get the insurance worked out, probably be around $800 - $1000 a year (19-yr-old, Sydney, Subaru = $300 for each of those words). But a smashing purchase all the same, mine is same model, but $12,500 and 60,000km, got to love the old lady cars.

Once again welcome, you'll be set now, not a question that can't be answered on this site........don't ask me though.

Re: Hej

average condition would be a kind thing to say about my car.

but it is just that, my car... so i don't care...

also, it's pushing 200,000 km, so that probably has something to do with the price. that and the guy at the dealership couldn't sell it. it was for 7,990 to start off with, he was gonna give it a coat of paint ant sell it for 8,500, so i'm pretty happy with 6,500... even though it's looking like i'll have to replace/repair the front suspension already... stupid wet weather and sliding off the road into gutters...
