Head/ head gasket issues

  Top of Page

Hey guys, I'm having problems with my gen 3 rx. I believe its head related as I've only recently had to replace the heads on my gen 2due to the head being cracked. The symptoms are similar but I think (hope) this one is just a gasket. The car won't drive without over heating and it looks like the combustion chamber is pressurising the radiator. I've also noticed a huge amount of steam coming from the exhaust and when it its running it coughs and chokes on initial takeoff until it clears the chamber/s of water.
The reason for my post is That I'm looking for any advice or hints on doing the repairs myself. I do 90% of the work on my cars but I've never changed the heads on a subie before. I imagine it would be very similar to other cars apart from the obvious, the heads are located on the sides and there is two of them. I'm going to take the motor out cause I don't think it can be done properly otherwise. I'm just after a little advice and any helpful info to make the job easier. What type of gaskets should I use, I don't want to do it again if the factory ones are inferior. I'll be sending the heads off for inspection to either all heads or hoppers heads. I'm not in a rush to do the job as the car is in the garage away from the weather and I can easily get to work on the bus for a while, I would like to get it done fairly quickly as its a pain not having use of my car. Thanks in advance for your help guys

Hey mate I had a similar problem with my gen 2 RX the head gaskets went and then when the heads were off i found out that the rings were gone as well. It is possible to do the job yourself you will need a workshop manual and a torque wrench and someone to help you with putting the timing belt back on because you have to hold it in like 4 places. I got all my parts from makin and luby they have all genuine subaru parts and they have a revised head gasket set.

I've done the gaskets on my car before so if you need a hand just message me.

I really doubt the rings are gonna be cactus its only done 150,000. I'm actually considering just holding out till I can save up some cash and just doing a full engine swap. There is less labour involved and I've always wanted an v3 or v4 sti powered liberty. I can do without my car. I'm just going to slowly pull the engine out and see what happens. I may have a friend willing to sell me the wreck of his sti, its got a built engine that's otherwise been left pretty close to stock. Its just a matter of convincing him he'd be better off without the bad memories of his accident clogging up his garage.
I'll see where I stand in a couple of months
