Just in the process at the moment. Looking at a stroker kit but not sure.
Bores and heads are in great condition just having trouble getting the plastic cam gear off the left bank to remove that head.

No mate. Going to take the 2.5 out of the B4 and put it into the Gen1, or at least that is what I'm looking at doing.

It does so appear that the AUDM TT's seem to be suffering some long term ill effects of the horrid stock tune.

Yet the JDM don't.

Might be going strong Alex, but we know you want to come over to single heaven.

Why the original question about rebuilds B4 Bullet? Are you planning a big build or are you starting to hear funny noises?

After having a ride in a good mate's WRX with EJ257 with all the fruit, I think I'm beginning to hear funny noises in my ride.... wink

I'm trying to save like crazy. Sister's wedding didn't help the matter.

MY02 (late 01 build i think). 75000 kms (the last 25000 of them by me and if it can handle that, it can handle anything!!) and good as gold.

Just waiting for it to go pop before I count my pennies and try for a 3.0 turbo conversion.

Re: Have you Rebuilt your TT

I ask the question as my car has just had it's 100,000km service and i'm going to start putting some mods into it. Mods such as Tek2, CBE,CAI TMIC or FMIC. Would it be worth it with so many km's. When doing the service my mechanic said that every thing he replaced was in very good condition, worn but very clean as if the engine had been taken care of.

Personally and this is my opinion...i think subarus make rather great engines...every engine will fail if its neglected or un taken care off...i know a guy has a gen III outback 01 model same as mine and its hit 350 thousand kms...serviced every 10thousand and the thing is still going strong...

So far 7 People have had to rebuild and 9 haven't.
7/16, this is disgusting odds for a major manufacturer with a reputation as being "reliable".

Re: Have you Rebuilt your TT

I don't think that it can be put down to neglect when the stats are this high... like its not impossible by any stretch of the imagination but I can tell you that my car certainly wasn't neglected. When I pulled the engine down it was actually pretty tidy appart from the destroyed pistion.
The oil passages appeared to be fine, there was no build up of burnt oil/sludge on any components.
I really do beleive that Subaru did a dodgy half assed job on the tune.

No rebuild that i now of with mine, only had it 8 months though so who nows before that, 130000km on it. Mind you i reckon i could pop it if i wanted to, pings like a bitch on a hot day with a bit of heatsoak, well it would if i didn't turn the ebc off (so it can only hit 6-7psi) and take it real easy. I'll keep taken it easy, changing the oil regularly and enjoy it on the cool days :victory: but i agree it is a bit of a disgrace for subaru.

Just to clarify, my rebuild is my choice, no fault of Subaru. Although my engine did ping its tit off and would have most probably died.

Re: Have you Rebuilt your TT

just after i got my car it blew a head gasket, and when i had it out i put in new bearings and rings and put in forged rods because a bearing was about to go and it had stretched rod bolts, i havent had any trouble since, except cometic headgaskets are useless. and i found that out the hard way.

then i pulled it out to use those rods in a 2.2 im building and chucked in an unknown secondhand V3 sti engine with my GTB heads. and ive just put fresh bearings and given it a freshen up after some rattling it was making.

Re: Have you Rebuilt your TT

the last thing i want is to start spending money on it then engine goes. What i've read it'll cost minimum $2500 for another bottom end that i don't have. As soon as i hear it ping i'm off the throttle a drive like an old women:hi:

Do it!!!

If anything, the standard tune will be doing the damage. Just make sure when it's tuned, don't try getting every last drop of power from it.

Colder air and a tune and you'll be doing your engine a world of good. If you can afford a dyno tune it's obviously better again.

Re: Have you Rebuilt your TT

My 02 B4 has hit 110000km's still going good on the stock tune. Only mods CAI and Waterspray so nothing major.  When i went to URD Automotive in melbourne he said it was in very good condition. If i change oil every 5000k's and take proper care of it his words were "it would last forever".  Before that he mentioned that once you start changing things under the bonnet trying to get better performance, thats when they stuff up.  And you must remember that a lot of us here have done mods and are hoons.  When you push any engine to it's limit often it will break no matter what company has made it. But that said Subaru has done a very poor job with the stock B4 tune.

If it's Broke, Use a Cable Tie.

Re: Have you Rebuilt your TT

I've had a retune and no pinging even on a 40deg day. The previous owner had it for abt 3 years and prob serviced regularly. Stock tune was bad but a retune fixes that all up until you starting talking abt VOD n all that. This poll is meaningless since its only a sample of the entire population. I would be interested to know the car's service history, where the owners lived and how they drove the car before the engine went pop.
