handbrakies

  Top of Page

hey all

This may seem like a really stupid noobish question. But i was just wondering, is using the hand brake to help get the car into a slide ie. hardbrake turn, in a AWD vehical any worse on the car ie.drivetrain, than your standard FWD or RWD car????

i know that doing it in any car is not going to be good for it but does the AWD system make it even worse..

When it's all said and done, your still only locking the rear wheels.

But as you may know, getting them to get the ass out, or spin, or the like is a lot harder because of the overall handling and grip of them, and it's not as though the GT is packed full of power.

Just drive the car the way its intended and you'll find that sh1t breaks less often.
Ie take corners fast, not sideways :victory:

Insert standard disclaimer(s) 'ere: If you break yo' shizzle, don't bitch to me about it

This is what I was doing a few weeks ago. Had a tonne of fun and kept the car under a fair bit of control. Im sure there are better ways of doing it.

This should get the ass hanging out a fair bit without losing complete control and allow you to do a 180deg turn with a fair bit of speed. The same principles can/could be adjusted for different corners, although im sure it would not be the fastest.. just really fun smile

1) Find some gravel/clay (but not too soft or you will bog it)
2) Come into the point you want to turn at with about 40kph in 2nd
3) Clutch in
4) Turn fairly sharply into it direction you want (~1/2 a turn)
5) Apply handbrake (keep your finger on the button!!), you may need to play with how hard you need to pull
6) let the ass swing out a little (finding the right spot to move to the next step will take a little playing
7) Release hand brake & 8) Release clutch
9) Give it some noise
10) Have your mate in the passenger seat giggle like a little school girl (<-- optional)

Even the little 2ltr GX had all 4's spinning. I could get more angle giving it a bit of the ol' Scandinavian (sp) however I didn't feel as if I was in as much control

Vut as XoN says

Just drive the car the way its intended and you'll find that sh1t breaks less often.

True, but when you do it in all in around 3-5 seconds, it just becomes a blur and happens. Plus, its not just to do some fully sik skids, it will give you a fair bit of control coming out of the turn (and is more funnera* imo). If all you wanna do is have flat spots on your tyres,

1) build up speed
2) Clutch in
3) apply handbrake
4) hold on

*yes, funnera

Yeah thats good fun especially on hairpins covered in tarmac .. in a completely controlled environment of course :-) Had a few hairy moments doing this though, one was stopping about 30cm from a metal guard rail weeeee dropped the clutch and stopped the car dead in its tracks haha smile

hmm all good fun but i wouldn't risk it in the rs.

used to do it in the 1986 holden astra now that was fun rip handbrake up on the dirt hard turn out sideways and apply the little power that it had and it would just slide along...

oh memories of that piece of junk smile

Re: handbrakies

The point is 93 model weighs just over 1 ton (around 1100) they have no problem holding on sideways doing about 40km/h around a corner without a hand break.

i would only recommend a handbreakie when doing a 180/360

(wide road 4 beginners) - Thats me, I'm not boasting how good i am!:yes2:

1) speed up to around 50km/h
2) slightly turn wheel (depending on the cars weight and speed this may vary)
3) handbreak > clutch in > position gear stick in reverse
4) about 130 degrees drop the clutch with 3000/4000revs and ease the handbreak off till your in the right direction...
5) continue driving in reverse and try for a 360

p.s. look backwards, oh and this is in a front wheel drive.

:bye:
