Grrr... car broke down

  Top of Page

At the traffic lights my car was idling funny. Revving from 1000 to 0 then back to 1000 before it stalled. Restarted okay and got onto the freeway 2 mins later to discover the engine temp gauge on Hot. Pulled over right away and discovered no coolant whatsoever.

Long story short... RACV come, tow truck come, $40 tow truck fee, a train ticket and three hours later, I made it to work.

Me thinks the radiator hose is gone. Will have it checked out on Monday. I'll stick some fluid in when I get home and check to see if there's a leak, Until then it's public transport and the waiting for me. Grrr.

OK,
sounds like what happened this time last year in our 1997 GEN2 RX auto.

mum was driving to sydney (from canberra) and the cruise control was on and the REVS kept on going up and down (from 2000 to 3000RPM.) i found that weird.

it was raining outside, and the car started to fog up on the inside at a fast rate.
put on aircon to stop it but didnt do anything, then i noticed the temp gauge was on HOT.

so we pulled over and just before we came to a stop the car stalled and then stopped. lots of steam was comming out of our bonnet.
i went outside and popped the bonnet and oil and crap was all over the top of the engine.

the car was able to turn over but not start.

we cooked the engine,

once back in ACT our mechanic said that there was no coolent in the engine at all.

$3000 and 2 months later we had a 2002 RX engine in the car.

i hope this isnt what happened to you as it might cost you a bit!

Hopefully its just a radiator hose & not one of the plastic parts on the sides of the radiator. We've had both split on different occasions, didn't cook anything, engine still lives on 60000km later. Temp gauge noticed before engine started doing anything wierd. The plastic on the sides of the radiator mean everything has to be detached & radiator unbolted/removed, a 2 hour job rather than 2 minute (literally).

please don't tell me that! I absolutely have no money. i was hoping it would be a quick ten minute job and $30 for a new hose.

one bonus is that there was no steam, and no oil covering anything. just hope it's a simple hose replacement, as when the car was serviced 3 weeks ago, the mechanic said i should buy some new hoses in the next 6 months.

*fingers crossed he is open on monday*

Re: Grrr... car broke down

ok, well my car was driven like around 15 mins maybe even 20 with no coolant. wasn't my fault, the stupid mechanics.

but i pulled over just before the needle went into the red.

and the engine is still fine, running as normal.

good sign no steam, i have been in a toyota that overheated and steam was pouring out of the engine, u could have a BBQ on the bonnet, and that car cooled down and still went on for quite a while.

it sounds like you should be fine, but there is a possibilty, that like your headgasket might be cracked now or something like that, i'm no technical expert.

good luck!

the racv guy said he couldn't refill the coolant cos it would probably crack the heads [ or head gasket? ]. it's a bummer working night shift and on weekends. no use getting it done on sat morning as most places are closed, and it would be too late to order parts in.

my mechanic is awesome, so i'm hoping he is open on monday and can repair it then. aaahh another day of no sleep.

upon closer inspection, it's a hole in the radiator. more grrr. i'm hoping they can weld it or something. can't afford a new radiator at the moment.

You could try raditator stop leak.

But I would be tipping that you are going to need to get a new one, or a reco one.

Re: Grrr... car broke down

We had a similar thing happen to our Hyundai (flame suit on) a couple of weeks ago the bloody radiator let go the top tank had blown up, drove around for 20mins with no water in the radiator $300 (for a new one) & 15mins installation later the thing is running sweet.

Interesting to note the car was burning oil (blue smoke) when there was no water at all the metal had contract/expanded so much so that the gaskets weren't holding the oil and it was burning it???

Although after replacing the radiator the thing runs as it used to be very interesting!

Re: Grrr... car broke down

Got it fixed. They welded it, pressure tested it and more holes appeared. Had to get a new core installed. Total cost - $385.

The problem? 2 or 3 different types of radiator coolant had apparently been mixed and somehow reacted funny, and corroded the radiator core.

$385 sure is a bummer to spend at this time of year, but it could have been worse. It could have happened next week when every shop is away for holidays.

I think the engine is running fine. I haven't picked up the radiator yet. Rephrase that... Mum & Dad haven't picked up the radiator yet. And today ( Wed ) is the last day this shop is open for 3 weeks.

When my car is running, I'll have to get a photo of my Dads liberty with mine. He said he was crusing down from Qld going 150km/h and said the car wanted to go more. I drive with my Mum doing 55 in a 60 zone and shes like "SLOW DOWN YOU"RE GOING TOO FAST!!"

$385 is a bit steep for a repair job, A new all metal radiator would have cost less then that.

Anyway, glad to hear your engine isn't screwed. Some people have been trying to tell me once the temp needle is in the hot area it's too late, the engine is cooked (although they were Holden owners).

Don't you worry, I've gotten mine to 190km/h with 3 people on board (on private land of course, speeding on public roads is bad) and the car still had more to go.. but I ran out of road   so I had to back off..

It felt so stable @ 190km/h too... felt like I was doin' 100km/h.. My old bimmer I got that thing to 180km/h and it felt 180km/h unlike the Liberty the things so bloody smoooooothhhhhhh

I also got mine to 190kmh (on a non gazetted road) and that was only in fourth gear.
Like Milkman said, it was very stable, seems the faster you go the more the liberty sucks to the ground.

well my break rotors are warped, so i get to 150 and everything shakes. put on the breaks and well, it shakes even harder. before this happened, i took my old RS to 180 and all was fine, didnt even feel like it was doin 180, it was cool.
