Getting Zapped but my car!

  Top of Page

Ok I know its bit of an odd topic. but I'm sick to death of getting zapped every time i get out of the car and touch the door.

Am I the only one who is getting zapped from my 02' rx seden. there has to be some one else out there getting zapped like this.

No other car i have owned has been this bad. It happens every time i get out of the car no matter how far ive driven.

is there a reson my car builds up such a large static charge so quick. Is there any other way to get rid of it besides one of those little rubber strips that hang  under the car.

I take it these are an anti static type thing? Have you tried them?

or you can buy one of those straps that hangs from the back of your car and rubs along the ground as you drive along

supercheap auto about $10.00

It's the nylon seat covers cos they build up static, I hate it too, but if you earth yourself on the door whilst stepping out this will usually stop it, when I was younger I worked at DJ's & we used to scuff around on the nylon carpet & build up a heap of volts then tap the customer on the shoulder, you'd get a half inch spark & scare the crap out of them, or better still hand them a metal pen:ohmy:

Its probably something I would be worrying about, cause you might not discharge the static in you till you put the fuel nozzle in the tank when your filling up.. then you will be spewing about not having that ugly strap on the back when you have no car to put it on to.:suicide2:

dude get off the trampoline. LOL

i haven't been zapped since someone got me with the zapper from a neighbours hot water unit. never been zapped getting outta the lib. but be careful when filling up, cos you don't want to be zapped with static with the pump filling your car.

I think mythbusters proved that and mobile phones to be BUSTED! Static will not cause the car to blow up. Had to be alot more than that. From memory, they had a vanderbelt (?) to create static and it still wouldnt do it.

I get static all the time esp in dry winters like this one we are having, I always just use the glass to shut the door and never touch the metal of the car when getting out. It doesnt help tho when I go to open the door to my house with a metal handle sad

Easy solve as you get out of the car hold something metal or slide your leg on the side of ur car as you get out so that you and the car are at the same potential.

I agree with d_generate it could also be the cloths you wear from what they are made of. My folks allways get shocked from there Pathfinder and I never do on it. We think the material of our cloths as they are different (generally) so some create static easier. But its probably best to go witht hat genuine part it doesnt look that bad compared to the bit of rubber tht hangs off the back of the car they look like s**t. I had one and took it off overall I have been zapped once out of the many many times I have got in and out of it.

Now I realise that it is because I have nylon seat covers.

I guess the only cure is to get rid of them or one of those anti-static devices.

What works is to touch the door sill or other metal part of the car with your hand before you get out and keep it firmly attached until after all of you is out. Then let go. No static. The RX was terrible for this - its that cheap chintzy fabric they use - but I never got zapped with that technique.
