getting bored with my gen 1

  Top of Page

Hey guys, this is my 2nd gen 1 liberty that ive had to date both used for daily driving so i dont rack up k's on the weekender, but i really wouldnt mind some more grunt for my lib, whilst retaining its sleeper look.
Just some back ground info, i purchased it after my last liberty wagon was written off no thanks to someone failing to give way. Luckily timing wasnt to badly as work had another 91 liberty sedan traded in 2 days before my accident, that was due to be passed through, so i picked it up straightaway and am happy to say it has been very well looked after. Its a red 91 AWD (Manuel) model with a 2.2l motor, factory headunit and CD player. And full service history every 5000km's to its current 180,000 km's, not bad for $1000 bucks big_smile perks for working at subaru i guess.

Now after searching around it seems alot of people are just switching out the old ej22 for a turbo ej20, but im wondering how hard it would be just to turbo the current 2.2l, would i have to replace my current ecu? Im looking to spend no more than 2k on the setup and would like around 100-120awkw (I done feel this is to unrealistic but i may be wrong).

If anyone can provide some info than would be fantastic or a link to a thread where this has been done that explains required parts, prices, etc.

Turboing a non turbo engine isn't a great idea because of compression ratios as non-turbo engines have higher ratios it means you wont be able to get as much boost as with a turbo engines lower compression so $2000 might be pushing it

My preference would be to put a ej20t in

just a rough guess turbo the engine you have might see 100kw
ej20t implant 150kw

What subiB4 says is true. The non-turbo engines also have softer duty pistons, since they were not designed to see the stresses a turbo engine will see. If you want to turbo it you'll be running very low boost, probably end up spending more money than a conversion, and end up going slower anyway.

A gen1 RS halfcut (if you can find one) would cost you less than $2000 these days, same for an early (~96) WRX half cut. Both will give you a lot more power, more reliably.

I have seen a gen2 with an RX ej25 in it with a custom turbo job, but the entire engine had been rebuilt with forged pistons, crank from an STi motor and so on. Building the motor would take you over 2k on it's own. On top of that there is custom wiring, an aftermarket ECU, exhaust, front mount (or top mount plus bonnet with a scoop), the turbo itself, labour, so on. You can make a lot of power this way, but it will cost you a lot of dollars.

yeah i knew about the higher comp in my n/a motor but was only thinking 5-6 psi, and maybe 8-9 on high boost.
Anyway ej20 seems to be the safe bet, thanks guys.
