Gen1 Auto vs Manual

  Top of Page

Hey lads,

I own a 1990 Liberty GX Auto sedan, picked it up real cheap, its only done 90,000 clicks, but anyway.

Its my first car, i learnt how to drive in manual, loved it, but the lib is auto. I just want to know how much better the manual is. I know the usual, more responsive etc etc, but whats the power difference like, do the manuals pull harder, are they more reliable?

Cause at the moment i'm considering buying a cheap manual lib, and transplanting the all but new engine. I just want to know are the manuals that much better that they are worth the hassle? Or is it really just a matter of personal preferance?
Any input would be great
Cheers

Welcome mate.  Manual variants would always likely have more power than the autos. Its personal choice but most of us would prefer manual over an auto.

bit confused about your wording but if you're intending to transplant a manual in lieu of your auto box, don't bother imo. Its not worth the $$ for a few extra killwasps in a GX. its your first car. Keep the auto as is and make whatever small mods you want to keep you satisifed till you have enough $$ to get a new more powerful model in manual form; if power is what you're after.

Love the manuals, its kinda sad that i enjoy hopping into mum's old 121 bubble just to have a run haha

My old man was a subbie mechanic for a good 20 years, he suggested if i want a manual that badly, buy a cheap manual regardless of the k's, and chuck in the almost new motor from the current car, cause all the works already been done, reconditioned heads, gaskets, etc.

Haha, I remember i was driving the 121 for a bit before i purchased my lib, one night dad comes up to me and he was like, "Stop doing burnouts in the 121" I promptly told him that i wasn't doing anything of the sort, he soon told me not to mess with a mechanic that has ECU diagnostics hardware, loss of traction codes came up haha

hey its not your fault you were going around a bend (in the wet of course) and you lost traction and you were trying to counter-steer.  Im sure the spasm in your right foot which kept it planted didn't help either...

Well to be honest, a few times were accidents, that thing was ridiculous in the wet, specially when picking gaps in traffic, would only stop spinning once you either let off entirely, or got up to third. I really didn't feel safe in that car when it was raining. But all the other times, well, thats a different story all together : D

Can say one thing, AWD is where it's at : )
