Gen 2 Side Strips - Another Approach

  Top of Page

Hi everyone,

I have a white gen2 sedan that has the black side mouldings on it and I think it looks like shite. Anyways, I have a mate who is a signwriter/sticker maker and we were discussing the other day whether it would be possible to cover the side strip in vinyl instead of painting it?

We thought it was a pretty good way to go as you could put a pattern through it or cut out some words or something in it.

Any ideas thoughts, opinions, pros or cons on it?

Thats it ^ I wouldnt mind it so much if they were the same shade of black but they are all different and they all soak up whatever I put on them to make them look nice and it turns to sh!t again. Plus I reckon the car will look sleeker and better without them.

I am gonna try track down a set to experiment with and see what looks good

just look at photos of RX models... they have body coloured side skirts...

i don't like the look of them... i've heard people use many different things to make them stay black... tyre shine works for a while... you can also get special automotive plastic blackener...

i've also heard of people using black boot polish with good results...

just re-colour them whenever you wash the car...

and tomm-o, dunno if you are being sarcastic... but i think some blacked out indicators (or clear ones) would look good too... i think you can get either from Import Monster...

though i'm looking at nightshading my tail lights/rear garnish, maybe i'll do my side indicators at the same time...

Vinyl would work a treat i reckon.
hard to scratch, hard to chip, pretty easy to replace if it gets knackered and you can have any design or pattern you wish.

i would however remove them from the car completely and have them done, as it'd be a damn hard job to get them covered 100% on the car.
and without perfect coverage they will just look ghetto.

i dunno why the hell you would want a pattern on the side-strips though...

it's just going to look like shit

but hey, it's your car, do whatever you want...

edit:
and even if you try to match the colour to your car it's not going to work...

i think that in the end, it's going to look shit... unless if you went with black or something... at which point you may as well saved the money and just chucked some boot polish in your current black sidestrips

i did this to my civic i had a few years back.you have to pull moulds off car to completely wrap vinyl around mould and used a heat gun to 'stretch'and make fit smoothly on edges.
i had a white civic with chrome mouldings and even the plastic around door glass on the rear of car.
looked schmick...
each to their own but.

I know what your saying Blaeven, but I am sick of having to put something on it every week to make it look alright.

As for patterns, I wouldn't bother. Just plain vinyl. Prob a cream colour to match aged paint.

I am gonna speak to my mate about likelihood of matching the colours and make a decision from there.

And Blaeven let us know how the garnish goes with some nightshades. I was thinking about doing it too

Do it! Cheap option to see how it looks. If it holds up they why wouldn't you keep it on?

Just make sure the colors match and you should be alright...

i just don't think you'll be able to get the colours to match properly...
they'll be different textures/colours and levels of reflection...

and i'll let you know about the nightshade when i actually get around to doing it...

yeah i rekon the tinted side indicators are good when you have a black side strip, if its body colour i rekon clear, but mine are tinted and i love em, cant see them until the indictors are turned on.

just looks like a part of the strip

i have heard good things about using a heat gun to restore the original look. only from what ive seen around the net. looks easy? and if you are thinking of possibly retrimming them maybe its worth a try first.
