gearboxes 101

gearboxes...how strong are they really, and how stupid do you have to be to blow them? any stories or know hows on what not to do would be helpful. maybe by knowing what not to do, i can look after mine :blush2:

-higher revs = higher torque = more pressure on the gears
-launching your car increases chance of breaking by huge amounts especially if its often.
-frequent thrashes limits life
-drive it normally with a few spirited drives here and there and theres no reason it shouldnt hit 150000k's+++

Flat changing will also do it.
Also if you put a stonger clutch this can also cause issues.

If you treat the gearbox with respect it will last.

If you want a stong box, look for a 98 STI 5-speed box with a 4.44 ratio.
Or any of the 6-speed boxes.

Or rebuild the standard box with straight cut gears.

hmm, cause i heard even the rexy boxes blow second, and that there isnt any difference between our standard box and a WRX box

Shh, Alex so far my box is holding up well (touch wood)

NA boxes I am pretty sure are weaker, although I am running a NA RX 2.5 box behind my TT, and its holding up well.

At the end of the day if you treat the box with respect it will last.
If you start treating it poorly, then not matter what box you have it will break.

i was talking about strength wise, they are basicaly the same. the importer said to me, that the wrx box wouldnt take more harm then our box. if u do something to fark up ur box, then it would have done the ame damage to a WRX box. jst something to think about when doing a conversion and short on cash

gear ratios and synchros are about strength. its the torque that is put through that breaks the gears, better ratios helps ease it and make use of it.

its shock load not power throughput that smashes suby boxes, so hypothetically speaking if you held your engine on the revlimiter and sidestepped the clutch youd have a very good chance at destroying the box, if you held it on the revlimiter and took up the friction point and then took your foot off giving a little clutch slip before bringing it up and start a little wheelspin youd not run as much risk breaking it.  so a worn in stock clutch is perfect for launching on a stock box as it slips where the box would potentially break.
same with changing to second, the clutch slips a little where a puk clutch with no slip could destroy it.
i DONT recomend trying that, but its the best way i could explain it.
as for what theyre capable of. ive done many 7k launches on my GTB box and thrashed it down the 1/4 mile 9 times in one night.
and theres a RS in taz thats run a mid 12 on stock gearbox, so its all up to driver ability and how careful you are.
but... nothing compares to 7500rpm clutch dumping tyre fryin Dogbox :shok: :yahoo: :grin:

that makes no sense to me. you cant rev match an upshift unless your driving like grandma, i dont know of anyone whos ever broken a box on downshift, but if thats what your talking about then rev matching wouldbe more gentle.

the way i see it is you have a gearset made from hardened Steel, it doesnt bend or warp etc, it just snaps and gets destroyed once its threshold is passed, so constant launches would have next to no effect on it until a crack or fracture is created on a tooth or you just smash it outright...

in the WRX and gen 2 boxes its generally 2nd that breaks as first is stronger than the early RS boxes

Mate as billsy says above, if you're rev matching on an up shift, then you obviously aren't in a hurry, so you wouldn't be launching or dumping it anyway.
Only way to rev match an upshift is to sit and wait for the revs to fall to the correct range...
