Gear Change Thud / Clunk / Shunt

  Top of Page

Hi All

Sometimes when my 2.5L 2000 automatic Liberty changes up gears I get a loud thud and the vehicle is shunted forward.  This started happening on odd occasions a couple of months ago and now happens most times i drive but only after the car has been running for a while (20 or 30mins).

Once the thud/shunting starts occurring it happens for the rest of the trip whenever the gears change up.

Every time this starts happening I also have loss of power at low revs (ie taking off from traffic lights).

I have checked the error codes and TPS codes shows up (No. 31).  I have replaced the TPS but still have the problem.

Any Ideas?

How hard/loud are we talking? Mine is smooth if I am not applying much power, but when I give it some, it shunts and you can feel the gears taking. I figured it was just an aggressive box (mine being a B4). Fluids are fine here too. Hasn't got any worse so I just continue to drive it. We've had lots of Auto's, the 4x4 we had changed in the same way. It could just be driveline shunt? But if its something that seems to be getting worse it might be worth getting a mechanic to check it out.

Worst auto (needed a rebuild) was my sisters pulsar. It delayed and would CLUNK really loud rofl.

Thanks Tsg, the shunt is full on. Everytime it happens it feels like the transmission is going to explode.  It not all the time though.  Before it warms up it is quite smooth between gears.  Then all of a sudden it start to thud each time it changes.  There is no gradual deteriation just starts happening all at once.  Sometime when I stop change into park turn the car off and start again it goes away for a while.  But often comes back within 5 mins.  I figure maybe its electrical otherwise it would happen all the time??
