G'day from Gonads!!!!!!

  Top of Page

Hey there guys/gals-very nice forum you've got here.

My wife and I have just got ourselves a lovely new silver MY04 Liberty GT with the Luxury pack (I think). It's the one with the big sunroof, McIntosh stereo and full cow interior. I'm so impressed with it that I just can't stop gushing about it. It rides beautifully yet still handles taughtly, it is quiet yet goes well and the interior is such a nice place to be. In the two weeks we've owned it we've done nearly 3000 very pleasurable km in it.

At this point I'll admit that I have a sickness. I was brought up to be a died-in-the-wool Ford man but somehow all that was brushed aside in a 2-minute test drive of a WRX several years ago. Since that fateful day the last 5 cars that have entered our household have been:
1. MY00 WRX
2. MY93 Liberty RS
3. MY02 WRX STi
4. MY99 Forester GT (with WRX engine conversion)
5. Shiny new (second-hand) Lib GT

Can anyone spot a trend developing? smile

My only complaint with the new-ish GT is that it is a little tardy off the line and could use a little more grunt. I'm sure these issues can be improved cheaply and easily if the Liberty is like other Subarus I've owned so I'm hoping to get some guidance into cheap and easy mods that can be done to improve things a little.

Unfortunately my wife has given me strict instructions that the car remain bog stock and that it never goes near a track or the locks will all be changed by the time I get home. smile I guess my point is that anything I do to the Lib will have to be subtle and not adversely affect NVH. I'm hoping that some of you other members will be able to point me in the direction of simple mods like resonator removals and simple engine management tweaks (I've got a tactrix cable and a Open ECU) that will improve driveability/grunt a bit. Any links to good, informative topics relating to "stage 1" mods would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Ben

G'day Lance,

No doubt about it- I love my Subies.

I have an Ecutek-tuned ECU in my STi and I hate it with a passion. No chance in hell I will be going down that route with the Liberty. Unbeknownst to most Ecutek users (and definitely not a feature that is publicised by Ecutek vendors), Ecutek causes the ECU to be encrypted so you cannot use any other type of software to alter it. I'm trying to be rid of it as we speak.

Don't get me wrong-there's nothing wrong with Ecutek. It works very well if it suits your needs. I'm interested in tuning my own cars and I now have the hardware and software to do it but unfortunately I can't do this with the Ecutek-encrypted ECU on my STi. The Liberty is another story though........

Cheers & thanks for the reply,
Ben

Thanks for the welcome guys.

SOO081-I can offer you very cheap prices on v1aagra. PM me for details. smile

Yep I've still got the STi, and the Forester as well (although not much longer). The Liberty does lots of things really well that the STi sucks at, like not shaking your fillings out, sending you deaf or putting you in the poor house with the fuel bill.

Kosti-I've got a copy of OpenECU, Enginuity and ECUFlash which should do the job nicely. I'm hesitant to go too far with tuning things on my own but I've got a couple of mates who know what they are doing. I doubt I'll go any further than mucking around with DBW throttle settings, data logging and maybe boost control.

Thanks again!

lol Good call Dale.

I think I've got a bit of reading to do. The Liberty is quite different under the bonnet to my previous and current Subarus. Twin-scroll turbo is a new one for me and the whole airbox and intercooler arrangements look quite different to me as well.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Dunno about that fatcat. I've got no idea about what works with the twin-scroll turbo setup. When it comes to WRXs I can basically recite what mods need to be done to gain certain power figures but with the Lib I'm still pretty much in the dark.

Hey there Ras! I saw a couple of your posts and wondered if that was you. I remember meeting up with you outside the RTA Transpost Management Centre (when I used to work there)and selling you my boost gauge. That was quite a while ago mate but it's goodto see you've moved on to bigger and better things with the B4.

Cheers,
Ben (go the blues)
