Sorry Paul, I can't agree with you on this one. Whilst I am certainly one that gets annoyed at the misuse of language, I myself am not a perfect speller, and I sure use some interesting commas and sentence structure.

I will concede that TXT is someone actively going against what they should know to be correct - almost making an effort to be incorrect.

I think that you can fall into a trap of being a bit elitist if you start moderating the way people are expressing their views.

I just find that TXT talk is un-called for. We have a keyboard and an 1000char limit. Its just unneeded and looks well... trashy. That and some people contract most every word, no matter how many letters it contains. Which can make it hard for some people to read, i know myself i've had trouble desifering some of these posts.

Brendan, i know my spelling sucks arse.
But i don't go out of my way to do it. If you see where i going with this.

Mainly as to how it looks to people comming to the site for the first time, very Boostcruising-esque. Which in my honest opinion should be avoided at all costs.

I agree with Soop, but realistically considering what appears to be the bulk of this community being young (sixteen to twenty-one year olds?), I'd probably blame the Department of Education for this considering the "alleged" syllabus change in the early nineties.

I know it may seem easier to abbreviate everything but at the end of the day, it's the English language that's being shat on.

If it's a fact of not being able to spell, then why not try and spell it rather than "TXT" it?

What gives me the ****s so much is not the bad spelling, not the smilies but the bloody abbreviating of words like "You" to "U" and "And" to "N", etc.

I also have no problem with REAL abbreviations, like "OMG", "WTF", "ROFLMAO", "GTFO" because it's the only god damned way to swear and bypass the god damned filter!

That's just me though.

+1 for limiting txt speak. it really make you look like a ***cing tool when you spell words like
"something" as "sumfin" for example.
also swear filters are pretty easy to get around, the human brain can basically work out what the word is, as long as the first and last letters are in the right spot, and the correct letters are in the middle......
i.e siht, cnut, fcuk tosesr............  they all work well enough

Not so much people who have trouble spelling, but those that just make no attempt at all.

It just reflects baddly on everyone else.

I definitely agree that it's annoying.

But I still maintain that you run the risk of becoming an elitist and frankly over moderated forum if we start editing every post with SMS language present.

Over time, you'll notice that threads started and replied to with a reasonable grasp of punctuation/spelling/grammar become far more viewed and replied to than those insistent on using shorthand.

If you would like to go on an F7 crusade though, be my guest.

Go ahead and ask someone to learn to speak english, but I don't think it's fair to go and moderate someone's post because they don't know what all the extra letters on a keyboard mean.
That's a bit like punching someone in the face because you can't understand their accent...
