First Car

  Top of Page

Thanks to blak b4 for my inspiration to start this thread.

Now my story is that I was a poor Uni student and my dad thought he would help me out with a car that was cheap to run.

I bet not many of you have heard of this car.

http://www.honda.com.au/wps/wcm/connect … 69+-+1972/

This car was an absolute bag of sh1t. Gutless like you couldn't imagine and wasn't that great on fuel.

The other problem my dad hadn't considered was the cost of repairs to such a rare little car. He bought it for around $500 (back in 1984) and each time an engine blew $750. He and my Uncle were always working on it, but f*cking it at the same time.

Now lets see where it all started.

Well my first car was a 1986 Sigma wagon, with a standard 2l motor, to which I blew with in 2 months of having my P's.

So the old man wacked in the 2.6 motor big_smile

Great car, I could hit speed bumps at 120 and you couldn't feel it smile
Loved the car, until a twit decide to pull out in front of me at 70kph sad

I'll post up some pics tomorrow LOL

Hahaha

I was just thinking this would be a great off topic thread!!!

My first car (morrie 1300) had a mean clunk-clunk noise and old man told me not to drive it until he'd had it looked at..  we took it to school (literally 3 blocks, a five minute walk) and on the way home it broke down, just stalled..  I was all upset at the boys for getting me to drive but at least we didn't have far to push it..  2.5 blocks!  Anyway, it seemed like it was stuck in gear until an almighty crunch and it started rolling..  only to reveal half the gearbox housing/torn metal fragments all over the road!!  Needless to say we put it back EXACTLY where we'd 'taken' it from and denied EVERYTHING!

Moohahaha!!

I remember not being able to afford gas for my second car (Corolla FXGT - HOT hatch) so we decided to hitch-hike to see some mates two hours away..  had a great day/night and hit the road early hitching back the next day...  Only to see my car fanging past the other way!!  My mates girlfriend had had the keys to get to work the day before and decided to gas it up and go visit the same mates, a two hour drive!  Biatch!!! Last time I ever left my car and my keys somewhere I wasn't!!

Re: First Car

like oriadae, my car was a camira, but a 1982 model. it sucked. no joke, it broke down so much, and would usually start once the racv van had come into sight. then break down 5 minutes after they were gone.

we got the angle grinder onto the springs, cutting them in half, so the ride was a bit harsh, bobbing up and down on the flattest/smoothest roads, and the spring would rub against the tyres. in the end the car had many dents brought on from frustration, usually with the closest tool available.

someone once wrecked the lock with a screwdriver and pinched my 6x9's, which i was cut about, because you can break into camiras with a plastic ruler. for a good 6 months i entered through the passenger door. then the rear door wouldn't open.

baby, where did our love go? i sold it for $200 after i'd got my corolla. then paid my dad $200 i'd owed him.

blak_b4, what kinda FXGT did you have? don't say AE101! that is my all time dream car. 4AGE 20v twin exhaust goodness.

First car was a 1984 Mazda 626 "SuperDeluxe" hatch. The deluxe part meant it had power windows, mirrors etc.
Rebuilt an old 2L mazda engine I had lying around, but the oil seal had a fit and was leaking oil at about 4L every two weeks. Eventually I got sick of the piece of sh1t and bought the Lib!

Nah..  I'm older than that!  The first shape..  had a nasty habit of letting the rear go when cornering too fast - real scary because the correct way out of the whip is to actually floor it, even chop down and floor it so the FWD could pull you out of it- the opposite of what your normal reaction would be to going too fast (ie. brake!  Try that and it's all over!)  In fact, that's what happened in the end..  beware the long journey in the middle of the night averaging 205kmh (WAY off the 180 clock) - I filled the tank and the weight difference mattered on almost the very next sweeper..  as Chopper says 'fkn.. BANG!' but yeah great cars, all of the two door models looked great over the different model-years..  especially the later CRX looking one..  that went like the proverbial too.. just a shame about the FWD though..  AWD would have been AWESOME!

Haha my parents had one of these... they were totally gutless from what I was told.

My mum had failed her driving test a twice in other cars - one of which for speeding. The time she passed was in this car, where they packed on two fat guys from VicRoads for her driving test, including my mum and dad.

I think the two guys felt so sorry for the car that they just let her pass ... haha I don't think that thing could of hit 60km/ph!

My first car was a 1991 Subaru Legacy Ti ... beautiful car ... 2.2L SOHC Single Point Injection, FWD! ... smile

Hahaha!  Raise yo P1MP hand!

I bought a F.O.R.D. Laser Hatch for $200 at a party..  Drove it for ages before I got hassled..  but I didn't get a ticket cos I said I'd just bought it and was on my way home..  Then I remember taking it to the inspection centre so I could work out what I'd need to do..

There was a long queue so I was sittin there a while and one of the inspectors came walking out into the carpark/queuing area and straight over to me..  I was wondering what was up (and I think we were probably smoking too - the line was pretty long and I had heaps to go) so I'm thinking 'whats up?' and he comes up to the window and says 'Mate, wouldn't bother with that heap..  you'll NEVER get it passed!!!'  Thought that was classic!

Sold it for a bottle of Jack and a fifty.. Pretty stoked with the deal too!

Sounds like you and me might be the oldies of this bunch mate!

Hows all these young blokes get the money for these fancy new cars. When I was a young bloke you'd be lucky to be able to afford over 20 years old.

Re: First Car

Started with a '79 2lt Sigma I bought from the old girl for 1K.

Blew the head within two weeks after running Unleaded in it (because RACV said it would take it  :angry2: ).  Spent some time learning a lot more about engines during a full rebuild, having previously worked on Datsun engines of a mate.  The harmonic balancers in the Sigma engine were an eye opener.

It got me through my prolonged University career.  Took me a while to work out it actually runs better i.e. more economical with a tank full of gas rather than constant $5 or $10 top ups from the empty sign.

Sold it to a mate for $250 after 6 years of ownership with a leaking water pump.  Jeez I nursed it through it's last days while giving it a flogging as he'd given me the cash prior to me handing over the car big_smile He wanted it for it's steering rack as he'd been quoted $400 from a wrecker for the same piece of equipment.

Cheers,

GT
