First Car, First Thread, Hello all

  Top of Page

Hey, Well time to introduce i guess.
I just got first car and although i never though of a suby when i was looking cause when i think of subys in my price range i always thought "Brumby" {Cringes}, i'm Wrapped with what I've picked up.
My knowledge on cars is limited so please bare with my ignorance, all my older brothers had moved out 10+ years before I was old enough to understand or partake in working on cars, the most advanced this I have done was change the clutch on my dads XF Falcon lol
Here's Some info:
93 Liberty GX, FWD, AT, 2200cc
Metallic Gunmetal Grey (Love the colour and  everyone comments on it):victory:
240K on the clock
79% Brakes
New CV's
Smooth Transmission
ALL Oil's look clean and
Crappy double height Head Unit :mda: (swapping for Pioneer HU next week)
Interior Immaculate
oh, an Aircon that Freezes my balls off :beach:
Fuel Gauge says full when full but drops off too quick with usage ( I get 200kms odd when its on E) until the light comes on and i filled up 80Kms after and she took 50L out of 60L tank) so getting about 580 for a tank 50/50 city/highway.
Overall its in A1 condition, bit high in the Km's but i heard these motors are good for 400 if looked after which this Lib sure has been.
Now for my few Problems:
Problem 1:
I found 2 minor oil leaks, one at right hand rocker cover gasket(supposedly common due to the layout of the engine) and the more major of the 2, on back end of the Sump (Trying to work out how to get to the back bolts as half of them were barely finger tight, I have to remove some plates to get access the the last 2 but tightening the others has helped allot and its only on drives of an hour or so that I can smell it burning when I arrive.
Problem 2:
What is with the friggen Power, Econ and Manual lights tongue
I get the idea of how the manual switch works, but i am unsure about the power light and econ light. here's the run down of what happened.
I got the car and the manual switch was on, i drove a day or so before i read the manual and realised what it did so i turned it off (i just stick it in D so it didn't make any difference) but upon turning it off while i was idle the econ light came on big_smile yay!
it was working fine until a few days ago i filled up for the first time and then the light was off, i checked the switch's(both manual and econ) and still nothing.
It's been 3 days now and nothing i do will make it come back on? the only thing i know is that it was on while the fuel light was on and i haven't done enough KM's to get to that point again yet, What's the go? any ideas?
I did the cable thing to check for errors with the engine light and i just got constant flashing which means all ok.
To accompany the above, what does the power light mean? i have read nothing about it in the manual and i don't have any other switches im guessing from what i have read here that it only applies to 4WD models? although it does light up when i put ignition on (bulb check) so why would it bulb check something that is not equipped?
Finally, Im in SE Melbourne, i need/want to get a few things from a wrecker: Antenna (mine only goes up down half way cause some prick bent it), some clean hubcaps(till i can afford alloys), black casing of right hand side mirror (like the part that runs around the mirror itself not the painted part), some caps for the rear parcel shelf cause they are missing where someone has put in booster seats.. some small random things like that (and maybe score a filler for the gap   that will be present after i install the new head unit ( don't feel like paying $40 for a new one from Subaru)
Does anyone know where any good wreckers with subys are? i go to geelong often so down there is ok aswell.
That's my intro albeit a long winded, biography tongue Look forward to being a part of the Liberty scene :new_russi

hey mate,welcome.

the power and economy lights apply to all models (FWD and AWD).The switch on the auto shifter alters the transmission shift points
ie;
in economy mode-the shifts are sooner (at lower revs) and kickdown to a lower gear is only done under high load.

in power mode-the gears are held longer and from memory (been a while since i had my GX) at full noise in power mode the trans shifts at about 6000rpm in each gear and kicksdown to lower gears a lot sooner and at lighter loads.

in my old wagon, the economy light would stay on while it was in that particular mode however the power light would only indicate when you turned on the ignition and turn off after about 5 seconds

hope this helps mate

Thanks for that Tim yeah i notice the difference lol, its kicking back quick, i must look like a hoon taking off from the lights tongue defiantly more torque compared to my brothers 04 Astra which is the only other thing i have driven.

I think the econ prob could be a dicky switch and just coincidence that it wouldn't work after i filled up, anyway ill let you know how it goes

and as for PICSORBAN as i keep reading in here, ill get some up soon wink

Cheers, Code

Hey man welcome to  the forums, speaking from experience because I have a Gen 1 Lib, the econo light only comes on when you depress the button on the gear selector and the power light comes on when you are overtaking (or hooning) ie; if you put your foot down on the accelerator in a sharp and swift motion it kicks the engine into "hyper mode" and allows the revs to go right up to around 6000Rpm.

Also if you are cimbing steep gradient's, driving down hills or towing etc that is when selecting manual transmission comes in handy because it allows you to hold the gear's.... it also sounds really good if you have a decent exhaust.. even gets a bit of kickback like rally cars.
