First big trip in our (not so) new suby

  Top of Page

Well we picked this Gen 2 up for a good price in July and have just added to the MASSIVE k's on the wagon. Was serviced (new springs and shocks, rear discs and pads, oil & filters) on the 17th of September with 208500 on the clock. One month later and the odom now reads 215750. From Sydney to outback NSW to the Flinders Rangers, Port Augusta to Adelaide, Great Ocean Road (v happy to have the new suspension for this part of the trip, a real awd wonderland!), Philip Island & Wilsons Promontory (one of the most spectacular parts of the country we've seen) back up the south coast of NSW to Canberra and back home (plus a few trips in the last week and a half to the north coast and back to Canberra) sees us clock in 7250 ks in a month. The car didnt miss a beat but did find a split driveshaft boot on front pass side. Replacing both front joints tomorrow. Happy Days!

nice one!

glad to hear your rather lengthy and extensive trip (bastard! i envy you!!) went very well, without a hiccup!

Did the inner boots go? (ie closest to the exhaust manifold)? When you get the new ones in, wrap the boots with a nice strip of reflective material.

Goon (cheap wine in a box) bag works wonders. Cable tie them on, and that'll extend the life on them a bit!!

Another good trick is to spray them (from an early age, ie after replacement) every oil change or 5000K with silicone spray, to keep the rubber supple, and helps them prevent cracking!

cheers

yeah, the inner one on the passenger side went. A local and suggested mechanic told me that depending on how much grease has been lost will depend on whether the joint will need to be reco'd or replaced (if at all, so far no clicking). I figure that I might as well replace both inner joints  as I dont know how long it was split for....(quoted $460) for both.... Is this a good price or cheap or expensive? I figure that the car has original joints and as that I dont plan on selling it (ever!... rather a new engine when required - touch wood) might as well get em done at the same time..... suggestions..... Alex, thanks for the tip mate. You gonna sell me your wheels or what!

Its a bit difficult to follow but.............

well its a bit of a funny story, I had booked the car into a mechanic in my suburb and he quotes me $260 a piece (ie $520) but reckons he will give me the discount for getting both done.... This morning I rock up at 8am and the mechanics closed! One short black later on Marion st (guess where I am!) and I'm looking at the garage mechanic across the road waiting for the mechanic that I (thought I) booked into to open! Anyway turns out I rang the gargae across the road instead of the actual place I wanted to go! I asked for a quote there and then and was given $400 for both. Needless to say I cancelled my booking across the road at the first place, had another espresso and walked off feeling rather pleased that I went to the wrong garage!
