Experiences with import Legacy GT-B

  Top of Page

Hi all,

I'm a complete nOOb here. I have searched but hard to find general experiences.

I'm thinking of an import GT-B, 1996 model from Japan.

I currently have a 92 RS Liberty wagon that has been a great car but unfortunately living near the coast and not being garaged it is dying a bit of a death.

What are general experiences with GT-Bs ? Do they go well, I've been told despite the quoted 206 kW they are a little disappointing.

How are parts to come by ?

Any major hassles with insurance/rego ?

Just wanting to know if any major traps to look out for ...

Cheers Tim

Are you aware of the general issues that come with trying to import a Legacy?

Are you looking at an auto or manual? The manuals have 206KW. Its the autos which run a different motor and have 180-something KW.

Parts can be found at local import wreckers or you can replace with aftermarket parts. There are also some online stores that get parts ex-Japan. So not as bad as one might think but you gotta be willing to do the leg work.

Things to look out for - the manuals (they have the EJ20R motor) have a reputation blowing big end bearings. Very costly $$$. The twin turbo system in general is extremely complex and when it goes wrong, its a massive pain to fix. If you buy a GTB, you gotta ensure its been well maintained or expect problems down the line. Otherwise, they're a great motor and there's no reason why it can't go on for a long time.

Expect a bit of clatter when the engine is cold. Don't be turned off by it, but obviously it should subside once you get going.

the stock TT system is a pain in teh backside.

but given two hours, a can of Upper Engine cleaner and some new vacuum hose
you can bypass half the problematic solenoids, clean all the actuators/ lines/ sensors and they do go well
add a good exhaust (dump pies are the ket to getting these things to breathe) and you'll push about 150-160KW ATW at 16psi from the stock turbo's

but make sure you run 98RON fuel, otherwise they will detonate and do big-ends
